Here is dear old Grandma Stolzfus.

She would like to share with you the tradition of scherenschnitte, or paper-cutting.  However, she also loves sewing, so she thought she'd combine her two loves and show you her edible creation.

First, the materials, from the bulk candy store

2 Fruit Rolls (natural, of course)
1 Tub cotton candy
1 pkg licorice lacs
1 pkg dried mango (for snacking)

Using her trusty X-acto knife (for Grandma is modern Mennonite), she cuts out and applies (applique, if you will) the traditional motif.

Now she sandwiches some "stuffing" between the halves of the pillow.

"Bastes" the two halves together with stickiness.

And begins to sew.  Grandma Stolzfus takes great pride in her "granny knot".

Grandma Stolzfus does not like to be disturbed while she's sewing.  It's that tradition of non-photography; she just can't shake it.

I took some close-up shots, so you can see the process.  First, Grandma Stolzfus poked some starter holes with a bamboo skewer.  Next, she used an over-hand stitch to sew up the pillow.

She ties a finishing knot and cuts the "thread" in the traditional way.

Grandma Stolzfus proudly shows off her Scherenschnitte pillow.

And then starts to enjoy the fruits (pun intended) of her labor.

Grandma Stolzfus is lucid most of the time, but occasionally she drifts towards senile.  We love her anyway.

NB: I knew I wanted to do this challenge with fruit leather (aka, Fruit Roll-ups).  They're quite malleable.  Unfortunately, the licorice rope is less so, and it quite stubbornly refused to conform to the over-hand stitching, stretching out the fruit leather.  I used corn starch to decreased the stick-to-my-hands factor.  DH had the idea to use the Amish bird motif.  Can you see the detailed feathers I cut out?  Yes, I'm nuts!!

Scherenschnitte is a traditional art form practice among the Mennonite people.  For our anniversary last year, DH ordered us a scherenschnitte piece personalized with our names and date of marriage.  The wacky, deaf lady he dealt with, who charged us twice and spelled my name wrong (initially), is our inspiration for Grandma Stolzfus.

Enjoy the sugar coma!  C/C welcome!!

Grandma Stolzfus needs a shave. Or is that native to her country. I love all your posts too, and you are the best  team on craftster by a mile.

How bizarre. I had a dream last night that I met your husband in person (as far as I know, I've never met either of you. I hope that doesn't weird you out - I just know I always enjoy the photo stories you tell in your posts, so I must have been thinking crafty thoughts when I drifted off to sleep. Smiley Anyway, after I woke up, I got to thinking and thought it'd been a while since I'd seen any of your work. And what should pop up when I get on the front page of Craftster today but...your latest project - which I must say has to be the one of the most creative uses for food ever - I love the detail you've put into the birds! Don't eat the project all at once and make yourselves sick, okay? Smiley

Glad to know I didn't disturb you or anything - I kinda freaked out a few hours after I posted that maybe you would think I was some weird stalker or something! Roll Eyes I find dreams fascinating, especially the idea of not dreaming in color - mine are always quite vivid, very detailed, and extremely strange - including this one, obviously. Smiley

I add my vote to I Sew Cute's! And yes, it is the best book idea ever. I'd totally buy that book - it'd be an awesome coffee table book to leave out for people to look through! What would the title be? Mr. & Mrs. __________'s Adventures in Craftland? Or something even more creative? Smiley

Your post made me start to giggle, then roaring with laughter.  Love what you and your DH do together.  You are a delightful couple and certainly bringing joy everywhere you turn.  By the way.....DH writes the funniest blogs.  Give him hug from me for allowing his adorable Granny pics to be posted and shared with this world.

Sorry!  I host photos at Photobucket, and my bandwidth has been exceeded this month.  I'll post a linky-dink, and they'll be back up in September.  I do host at craftster, too, but they don't have a bulk uploader, and the 'bucket makes it easier.
