Dashund Clutch....fail??
«
on:
July 31, 2009 12:06:01 PM »
Ok so I wanted to make something for my friend's birthday, she loves dashund's so I searched for inspiration, and found this!
http://www.dutchbydesign.com/products-Dashund-Bag-Red_KDBRD.htm
It seemed easy enough and a cute idea, so off I went to make her one! I've never worked with leather so I was rather nervous...and I've never made a purse, so the zipper and lining was a first try for me as well. I think for a first try it came out pretty good, but I'm not sure if it's worthy as a gift, would she really use this? The pocket area is a little too small for my liking, doubled by the fact that I had to stuff the rest of it with filling to make it stay up.
I also have some softer, lighter purple leather that I bought and some interfacing(which I've also never used). But I'm leaving to go see her tonight...should I just leave this grey pup at home and try again and hope to get it to look better? Is this one a complete failure?
Any suggestions or ideas on how to get this to look like the link would be really appreciated! I'm still learning! Thanks everyone!

Its not a fail at all, and since its a clutch it is supposed to be a bit small.
Take it and give it to her!

I love it and it is NOT a fail at all! You so need to give it to her and if you don't then you have a long list of people standing in line to get it from ya. Great job.
I think a lot of use would love to know how you made it if you are sharing that info.
I have a Piebald Doxie so I would love a little clutch like that to carry around.

For having never done a lot of things it is good to see that you are so talented to make it all turn out. Your friend is very lucky. You need to give that to her because it is great. I love that it can stand on it own. by the first picture I would have not guessed it was a purse besides you had told us. You did good.

This is super cute and so well made. It looks just like the inspiration piece, too. Besides, even if your friend doesn't use it as a clutch out in public (which she would be crazy not to!), she could always use it for make up or toiletries.
Oh, and if you're worried about the dog looking dead because of the x's for eyes, you could always use buttons instead, but that could be potentially creepy as well. I didn't notice the eyes, though.

Thank you everyone for all your encouraging comments! =D
I did end up giving it to her this weekend and she absolutely adored it! And was happy to hear that I would be making her another one because she'd love to have 2!
I feel a lot better about it now =)
A few of you asked how to make it, so when I begin the other one, I will try to make a little tutorial for ya, (although I've never done that either!) and I will be trying it with interfacing instead of stuffing, so we'll see how it turns out!
Again, thank you all soooo very much for your kind words, you're gonna give me a big head =p

You did a good job on that bag. We are our own worst critics. I always see the flaws in my bags and my friends say that they love them. Making bags is a learning process. There is always something you would do a little differently when you make the next one.

Fantastic job -- the only thing that I see different from yours and the original is that the ears could go back just a touch so you see more of the muzzle. Otherwise this is great looking. It has givin me some ideas

i like it.
i think about making this bag for so long. you did a great job.
i think the original one stands better because it's a really thick, stiff leather, maybe even with interfacing. and i think that the original one isn't really able to stand on it's own.

No, this is NOT a fail. It is amazing. A clutch isn't made to hold much anyway, and if she likes Daschunds then she should love it. Great job, much much better than I would have done on a first try.
