Welcome all ye land lovers to me first tutorial of many more to come!
I was planning to make this a photoshop tutorial but that would've limit some people that don't know their way around it yet. I decided to mellow it down to include all mediums. You can do these guys with pencils, painting, pastels, sewing, even as cakes! The ideas are endless.
The idea is basically a basic shape box to be simply designed for anyone to do, you don't have to be a master artist. You can touch up the details to any level you want. These are inspired by cartoons...when they pan to the character's face and their emotions are exaggerated to the point of hilarity.
You don't want much on it, two eyes, a mouth, hands and nose are extra.
To get ideas and start, you want to sit down and sketch out different expressions. You can go online and look for pictures of your favorite cartoon characters and copy their expression. Go crazy! Mix and match different facial characteristics.
Once you decide on the monster's expression, layout the sketch on the object you're going to put it on. It could just be a face...or you could add hands doing things.
Now that the monster has a face and is all layed out, start painting on the body to the color you chose. (I made mines in photoshop but you could use whatever the heck: watercolors would be interesting, doing a square pillow would be cool) If you're using fabrics, play with different textures and colors.
Then you can paint on the facial features, afterwards you can really let loose and paint some texture on the guy. You can add boogers, pimples, pores, tattoos, fur, play around until you're satisfied.
To finalize it, you can add accessories. Hands holding on to things, making gang signs, flipping the bird, give the guy a little tie perhaps.
Now that you're done, here's some ideas on what you can use them for. You can make icons, pillows, hang them up as wall art, screen savers, greeting cards, plates and dinner ware, a kid's abc book, the possibilities are endless.
I hope you like this tutorial and gives you creative ideas to add to your arsenal.
If anyone gets inspired, post some pics on the thread, I'd love to see what you create. Any questions you might have, I'll be happy to answer as many as I can.
