It's the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing today, so I thought I'd make something to commemorate the occasion. I used photos from NASA to design a realistic moon to embroider with my new favourite technique, punchneedle. (If you don't know what punchneedle is, I have a free tutorial on my blog Smiley)

The finished moon used DMC floss in 4 shades of purple, plus white, and it measures 5" across. I glued it to a black-on-black paisley cloth background to be the 'sky', and mounted it on padded stretcher bars.

I'm really happy with how 3D and textured it looks. Hope you like it too!

Oh! That's just awesome!
I have no idea what punchneedle is, so I'm going to check out your tute.

Edited to say: Hmm, that's interesting. Where do you buy the punchneedle itself?

Most craft stores (Michaels, JoAnn, etc) sell them - you can get a basic one for about $3 or one with adjustable depth for around $15. Mine is the expensive one but I don't use the adjustable depth feature, so the basic one would be fine Smiley

Thanks! I really don't like any of the kit patterns available - that's why I started designing my own Smiley What's the design in your kit?

That's so beautiful! Thank you so much for the tutorial, too. I've seen the punch needle supplies in the local craft store, but hadn't really paid much attention to them. This is yet another craft that I'll have to learn! Smiley

Very nice! I'm really impressed that you researched to make it realistic instead of just making it "look like a moon." It's a great touch!
