I've entered this in the Greenwala Choose to Reuse contest, and would appreciate any votes you guys want to give!

http://www.greenwala.com/greenwala_contests/all/5-Choose-to-Reuse-Sponsored-by-Hewlett-Packard-HP/entries/all/120-Book-headboard

I work a a used bookstore, and so I was able to save a lot of old books and wanted to reuse them. I've previously done a table with book legs (http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-table-legs-out-of-books/) and a bookshelf out of old encyclopedias (http://www.instructables.com/id/A-bookshelf-made-of-encyclopedias!-YAY!/).

I wanted something a little prettier this time. Smiley

It's made out of book covers, Elmer's Glue-All, a plywood backing, and some polyurethane to seal it. It was really simple as you just glue them down in layers!

The complete write up is here if anyone is interested!:

I suppose I can understand that, but after working in a used bookstore for so long I've come to accept that some books are greater than others (Are you listening, Mr. Grisham?), and that the lesser ones are worth more once reincarnated. Cheesy

We tend to get in a TON of older books in bad shape by authors no one remembers, so it's nice to save some from being turned into cardboard or donated!

this rocks so much Smiley and yeah i don't know if i can stomach the idea of destroying books, even if it is to make something as awesome as this but i understand that some books will probably end up going to the landfill anyway so... creative endeavors such as this are good repurposing options

I really like how colorful this is! Didi you use precolored book covers or did you paint them before you hung them up? Great job!

This is so amazing!  I love it, and I might try it sometime if I can scrounge up enough old books at the thrift store that  a: are crappy enough that I don't want to read them and  b: have gorgeous colored jackets like those!  Beautiful, and goes so well with your quilt.

Ever since I got involved with our Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale, I've been looking for ways to use up books that nobody wants, which is what got me into Altered Books .... and Book Purses.... and Book Bookshelves.

But this is WONDERFUL! I love it!

Thank you for those links. But your headboard is great. I love the ideas the craftsters come up with and I am amazed. I love it. But I love my art deco bed, so if my nephew ever moves out, I will use this idea for the guest bed.

Some of the spines have text, is that the original text, or did you put quotes or something on them. I still can't believe this.

Great headboard!  I saw something similar on TV once, but they painted over, etc.  The preserved original-ness of this is very appealing.

I'm getting over my aches of reuseing books and can't wait to make something like this.  I'm wisting.... thanks!

I super-duper love, love love it!!! And I have to say, I've been looking for that fawn lamo for months! I really want one. i know they used to sell them at Urban Outfitters, but they haven't had them in-stock for quite some time now.
So I'm super-jealous of your awesome headboard and your cool lamp!!! LOL.

I missed a really great orange squirrel lamp from them, though. I still regret not getting it!

this is totally awesome!!!! I am *such* the book geek... I swear I am!!! Anyone remember in Beauty & the Beast when he gave her his library?? yeah that's chalked up as one of the most romantic moments in my opinion Wink.... I wonder if I could do this?? I have a queen sized bed, but we have it on a black platform because our cats kept dragging stuff underneath the bed so we didn't want them going underneath anymore. We don't have a headboard though.......
