Here is the camera cake my mom and I made for my sister who is now in graduate school for photo-journalism.  It turned out pretty awesome if I do say so myself.

Its Yellow cake and minus baking time, it took 3 hours to decorate - a.k.a quite a while

The outside covering is fondant that we dyed.  The lens is cake that we cut out with a cookie cutter and then covered in fondant as well.  My mom has been making cakes for every holiday there is since I was born; she sort of just picked up on the hobby from the Wilton books, and as for me, I just sort of learned the trade from helping her out.

that is amazing. i love it. i have to ask since i was actually wondering this today. what does the fondant taste like. how does it compare to frosting. not the kind from a can, but the kind that is straight up powdered sugar and someother stuff. do you know what i am talking about? i suppose you could call it decorators frosting.

Sadly, fondant doesn't takes very good. It's essentially a doughy sugar and water mixture. I'd recommend either rolling it out really thin (1/8") before applying or peeling it off before serving.

For this particular cake, we used a pound cake just because we needed something that would not get stale as fast due to the fact that we were shipping it and you never know how long those things can take.  However, every other cake my mom or I have done, was made using just a regular old cake mix from a box and it works perfectly fine.  If you are a little uncertain though, I would use pound cake for your first time because it is a tougher/sturdier cake, but I swear normal cake works too. [/b]
