Starwars Cakes

I made these cakes for my partner's birthday back in April. It was my second time using fondant. It is marshmallow fondant that I made myself using a recipe from the Cake Journal. 

Both cakes together:



Lemon Stormtrooper with home made lemon curd filling and a vanilla butter cream:



*Note- Fondant that is painted with black food dye does not taste good and dyes your mouth black!

Chocolate Chewbacca with chocolate butter cream:



I had a great time making them (although it took a long time!) They were inspired by these toys:

I've seen R2D2 cakes and Darth Vader cakes, but I've never seen a lemon stormtrooper.  Pretty awesome.

Lol.. I'm glad I inspired others. I was thinking of making a darth vader, but I was worried about that much black icing! Boba Fett would turn out quite nicely I'm sure.

To make the designs I made stencils out of craft paper by tracing the cake pan (to make the right sized circle) then drew on the shapes of the characters. Then I labled each piece with the colour they were supposed to be made in and cut them out. It made making the right size and shape pieces much easier than freehand.

These are great! I use the marshmallow fondant too and people seem to like it better. I have never had much success with really dark colours either. They always taste awful- I wish there was a solution. I try to avoid using black and use the darkest chocolate icing instead.

It was nearly impossible to dye the fondant black. Instead I made black paint with simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water boiled together) and black icing paste colour. i just painted that on the cut out pieces of fondant. It was a better colour than I could make by mixing, but it still was pretty bitter.
