I googled "Hand-worked batik from the Yogyakarta tradition," and there are lots of crafting opportunities. Those batiks are beautiful!

As for all the themes that are a little more unusual: I think they would seem really scary at first, but challenges are usually good for me and some of my best work comes from being very challenged and pressured to do well. Can you tell that I've been on the forums at my new school a little too much today? That sounds like the answer to a question asked at a job interview or something...lol.

Cheesy Yay! Themes!

They are all so random, and that makes it a lot of fun!

Mine are:
Cuba
Yoruba
Africa
Rastafari
and I think Trees, but can't remember and my Outbox refuses to save copies of my outgoing messages.

Cheesy

I love an unusual theme. It forces me to think outside the box, and expands the realm of things I can incorporate into my own work. Plus I enjoy thinking that I'm making something truly unique.

I googled "Hand-worked batik from the Yogyakarta tradition," and there are lots of crafting opportunities. Those batiks are beautiful!

They are just wonderful. Every time I go home to Yogya I ask my mama to take me to her preferred batik vendor, and I spend a lot of money on hand-worked fabrics. I'm not brave enough to cut into them though....
I've started buying 'art' batik as well, though I'm pretty damn sure that what I'm buying is not a one-off original, but stuff that has proved popular with the tourists. I haven't found the truly unique stuff yet, but I feel it might be out of my budget if I ever did find it.  Sad

Mine are:
Cuba
Yoruba
Africa
Rastafari
and I think Trees, but can't remember and my Outbox refuses to save copies of my outgoing messages.

Oooh. Cuba and Yoruba. That could be interesting..

Here are mine!  I love batiks too, may have to Google the specific types that are being mentioned here as well Smiley

1  THE OCEAN
2  BUTTERFLIES
3  RETRO PATTERNS/PRINTS
4  NATURE
5  CELESTIAL (STARS, SUNS, MOONS)
*6  BLUE
*7  BATIKS

6 & 7 are obviously themes that could be swapped in lieu of the original 5 if needed...I love all 7, so a swap out by my partner on them would be totally OK if needed Smiley

I'm too tired to really provide much information, but here's a few of my batik fabrics if anyone's interested:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kittenwrangler/sets/72157620962889511/

You can obviously pick out the three 'art' pieces. The purple one is more tie dye than batik, but it's a pattern that reminds me of my otherfamily in Yogya. The ones that are white + 2 browns are the more Yogyakarta style ones, and the others are from other batik centres in Java.

ETA: This is all stuff I've bought - most of it from my Mama's preferred batik producer. Everytime she take me there, she tells me I'm 'boros uang' (a spendthrift) because I just spend up big (in IDR - they're about 70,000 to 150,000 for 2 metres.)

Wow, I have never seen batiks so gorgeous. Google images is my friend! Smiley

As regards the more "odd" themes, mine are only so tame as I'm about to become a proper businesswoman - so I tried to go with "office-appropriate" themes. Me and TheSapphireMoon have a theme in common too!

A few "more interesting ones" I discounted were pirates, moustaches, pin-ups, and day of the dead...

Hmmm....I'm gonna guess maybe celestial or the ocean?  Those would be 2 of my faves out of my top 5.
