This is a portrait of a friend of mine, which I embroidered as a gift which he has recently received as a surprise belated birthday gift (his birthday was in early March - oops).

It is embroidered using black DMC floss on organic linen, in a frame that I sanded down and spray painted.  I used soluble paper (solvy) to transfer the pattern.

He is playing a type of Turkish flute called a ney and that is a glass of wine on his right.

I love how it turned out, especially the hands....

Here is the original photo that was used for inspiration. I believe the photo was taken by Sarah Chiodetto.

There is a youtube clip of Kenny practising the ney here,

Comments appreciated.

That's an awesome gift!  He's lucky to have it.  What a great idea.  How long did it take to do all that stitching?  Did you make the photo black and white with some software to start, or did you just eyeball it?

Thanks, I changed the color to black and white and adjusted the brightness and contrast to make a pattern to follow.  I used split stitch all the way through, which is a really fast stitch for me, so I only really spent about two or three weeks working on it and then only in the evenings.

Perfect! It's absolutely perfect, especially with the added in glass of wine! I really like the oval around it, frames it very nicely. I hope this gets the praise it deserves!

Wow, it turned out awesome. It really looks just like the picture, only in a more "artsy" sort of way. I bet he loved it!
