I am so happy with the way this project turned out!

I've been wanting to try this project for a long time! I used photo transfer gel to transfer photos to a plain white lampshade. The photos were taken in Sitka, Alaska

First I printed copies of photos I wanted to use. Make sure they are the right size to cover your project! The makers of the transfer gel, however, suggest using high quality copies, as ink jet print outs may fade over time.

The gel is also a glue! I used wax paper or freezer paper to cover the table.

I applied the gel in three coats, allowing each one to dry. The first coat must be vertical, the second horizontal, the third diagonal. It took about half an hour for each coat to dry.

The images have to soak in warm water for ten minutes. After they soaked, I put them face down on a vinyl tablecloth.

While the images were still wet, I peeled away the paper from the back. This step was hard, as it came off in very small chunks. The directions recommend gently buffing the paper with a lint-free towel to wipe away the bulk of the paper.

I let the paper dry and then applied it to the lamp. First I applied a thin layer of the gel to the shade, applied the paper, and then painted another thin layer over that. Then I trimmed away a little extra paper from the top and bottom and folded it under! The gel is pretty sticky, so it holds well.

Finished!

I just love this!  I've wanted to use some photos for a lampshade but had no idea how to do it at a reasonable price for ages!  Thanks so much for including a tutorial.  Consider this bookmarked and rocked.

This is awesome! My mind is turning, I've never heard of ink transfer gel, I can't get my mind around the possibilities. Was the project pretty fun? Or was it hard? Would you attempt something like this again?

Thanks everyone! I used Omni-gel photo transfer gel which I bought online from Fire Mountain Gems...I've heard you can also get it a Michael's but I don't have one near me. The project was fun, I think I would try it again...the worst part was waiting for the coats to dry. But if I did it again it would probably go faster because I'd know what I was doing.

That's really pretty.  I love that it looks so nice and tree-like even while the light is on.  If I made that, I'd design the rest of the room around it!

Okay so once again I am completely redoing my pictures. Got tired of photobucket, the only reason I used it was for here so I decided I will just use Craftster's photo uploader. So while I am switching over my photo links will be broken. Message me if there is a post you would like the pics for.
