I've painted lots of ceramic plates, but never made a mosaic... until now!  It was a lot of work, and I'm not sure if I would be up to attempting another.  I made this one for my saxophone teacher at university, as a thank you since I just graduated.

Before grouting:

And the final product:

I wanted it to look like stained glass, so I went with the black grout.  But looking at the before picture, I kinda wish I had gone with a lighter grout.  Undecided

Well, thanks for looking!

actually, and i hope this doesn't come out wrong, but i looked at the 1st pic and thought "i hope that's not the finished piece, because it looks like it's missing something..." and then i looked at the final and thought "there it is!" because i think the dark grout gives it what it was missing.  not sure what you would call that... the best i can think of is that it's a bit like shading.  anyway, i think the prof should love it.

I agree, the dark grout is great. Good choice. It makes the whole piece stand out an "pop" more than no grout or light coloured grout. Very nice job, you are a kind soul. The prof will love it Smiley

I so agree because the dark grout really highlights the detail of the piece. Your teacher will love this.

I agree with everyone else--I LOVE the look of the dark grout. It looks so fantastic! And I bet your teacher will adore it. And congratulations on graduation from one musician to another! Smiley

You did a great job, and should do more mosaics. The first one is always the biggest pain. Smiley

What an awesome peice!  Your teacher will love it, I'm certain of that!

To me, grouting is always the scary part of mosaics.   Undecided  You made an excellent choice with your grout.

I love that you made the shape a sax rather than putting the picture on a square board and mosaicing (is that a word?? mosaicing?) the whole thing.  Does that make sense?   Cheesy

Anyhoo....fabulous job!
Thanks for sharing!

Awesome, awesome, awesome! My saxo buddies would absolutely love this (I'm a guardie, and I still adore it!).

Guardie for life.

I am really interested in doing a personal swap, especially for greener things like reusable lady items, wool dryer balls, or other such things.  I can knit, sew, draw, and put things together in pretty neat ways.  Please PM me if you're interested.

With the dark grout, it reminds me of the Yellow Submarine!   Cheesy  I think it looks great.

As a clarinetist/saxophonist I think that's awesome!  I think you did a great job.  It may be a lot of work that you're not sure about doing but I'd love to see what else you could create!  Great job!  Cheesy

As a musician and sibling to an incredible sax player (I'm only mediocre), I think the dark grout looks better. It kind of "ages" the sax so that it looks more sophisticated. Not to mention the lighter grout would've washed out all of the color, if you know what I mean. It would've been way too bright.

I really love this! Now I want to make one for at least one or two of my favorite instruments. Probably Piano and French Horn or something. WAY easier than saxophone, I don't think I have that much patience Smiley
