Julie's Recipe For A Creative Jumpstart

1 Part Motivation

I consider myself to be a creative type person. I love to decorate, craft, illustrate, write and read about all of these things. Mostly I like to think and talk about all of these things. And because of that, I can go months without actually doing anything creative and yet I feel like I have been due to all the scheming about it. Looking at my completed projects for the year, however, it turns out all that scheming produced nothing. I need something something that will force my creativity to once again be an active part of my life.

1 Part Planning

Previously stated, I really like talking about these things. The planning and ingredient gathering seems to be one of my top three favorite parts about being creative (In no particular order they are: planning, doing and seeing the finished project. But Im guessing all us crafty/creative folk have the same top three, right?) Once I admitted I had a problem I sat down and did some research. Starting on my birthday next month I will embark and a few different creativity sparking year long projects! These are just a few, I am open and looking for a wide variety of other ideas and projects....

1)   100 Ideas by Keri Smith
http://www.kerismith.com/funstuff/100ideas.htm

I think this list is mainly for illustrators, but I like the concept behind it. Its a list of 100 things to do to get you doing something creative and you record each one in a journal. I think the author intended you to do 1 a day for 100 days, but Im thinking about 2 a week for a whole year. Things like Write yourself a letter in the future and Draw your grocery list are easy things to do to get you creating something regularly!

2)   The Artists Way
http://www.amazon.com/Artists-Way-Spiritual-Creativity-Anniversary/dp/1585421464

Ive been told this is the ultimate in creativity seeking. Written by an artist who started showing other people (artists and not) how to find the creativity inside of themselves through exercises and journaling every day. Ive had a copy of this and her follow along journaling notebook sitting on my shelf for years, just collecting duct. What better time to start than now?

3)   YOURSELF
http://www.scribetime.com/Journal-Writing-Prompts-Creative-Writing-Ideas-and-Exercises_ep_45-1.html

I think that as creative types we all must be comfortable focusing on ourselves, no matter how easy it is to make things for others. The act of making art should come from somewhere inside ourselves in order to find our own style.  So Ive found a list of writing prompts at scribetime.com that focus on our own lives and the things and people we connect with. I think that using one of these a week and really pushing for them either in writing or whatever artistic bug that flies up my butt that day will push me to find my style and a little bit more of myself.

1 Part Accountability

It is far to easy to tell myself that I had too much to do, the laundry is piling up, my friend needed a girls night out or I was just flat out too tired to want to do these assignments. So I figured I am going to have to start a club or something a small group of people willing to meet once every other week or so to hold each other accountable on this adventure. At first it will be hard to find the time, but Im willing to bet by this time next year well be getting together less to make sure we all did it and more to talk about the wonderful things we are making instead.

Stir For One Year and then.

Keep a record of everything weve all done and then take a trip down memory lane to see how weve progressed?

So there whos interested in keeping me in line creatively for the next year?
THIS ROCKS   Logged
