I got a cheapo fleece blanket in the mail from a "hey you gave you a gift to guilt you into a donation" place.   Huh

Well, I didn't support the charity and I certainly didn't give them a donation. But what to do with the pitifully thin fleece blanket they sent me? I cut it into strips and made a ton of braided dog chew toys, just like the braided fleece toys I've seen at the pet store.

My sister's dog is a heavy chewer - the guy can kill and destuff a toy in a few hours but these braided toys last around 3 days or so. Pretty good for a dog named Chopper!

This is a great stash buster project. I now save my fleece scraps and make them up and give them out as Christmas gifts.

these are wonderful gifts. i have been making them for a while, and i make my friends dogs a new set every summer. i sometimes get the expensive fleece and use the scraps for the ropes. they are great because they wash up pretty well too.

these are awesome stash busting and they are fun to play with the dogs too!

Those look so cool. How do you braid them so tightly? How many strips per braid? I want to make some for my local APL shelter.

I use 3 strips per braid. I hold the knot between my knees to keep the braid taught and braid until I get to the end of the pieces and then tie a slipknot finish it off.

Homemade dog toys always seem to last wayyyy longer for us. We've got two aggressive chewers, and using poly/cotton blended fabric in a four strand braid always seems to work best. How does the fleece behave? Does it stretch a lot when the curious canines start tugging?

Nice! My SIL has an Alaskan husky who would love some of these.

my dog gets all of my fleece scraps Smiley she is of course a dachshund, so not too destructive of her toys (as long as it doesn't have eyes) and fleece is her favorite, the one she plays with is just a single 8"ish long piece with s simple knot tied in the middle. she plays with that forever, while her other, eyeless toys watch in jealousy. Cheesy
