I just had a swap partner ask about pom-pons (pompoms) and told her how to make one with a ball/yarn winder.

So I figure lots of us would want to know how to do this, so here is a quick and easy explanation:

Basically, you wind a nice little ball, on your ball winder, the size you want your pompon to be.

You take a piece of yarn about 6-12 inches long through the ball (or maybe wrap it once more for security) and tie a tight, thick knot.

Holding the knotted yarn piece, you cut through the ball opposite side from where it is tied.

Then hit the cut ball repeatedly onto a hard surface to fluff it out, then cut into finished shape.

On the picture of the wooden pompon winder, all it is a ball of yarn wrapped between two pegs. . .

You probably could purchase an extra winder cone and cut one down for smaller pompons and add thick "spacers" of cardboard around the outside for larger ones . . .

too easy.

if you want it more fluffy and less stringy, boil it in a pot of water.
