Yes it stretches.  Different stitching will allow for more or less stretch.  Smocking was actually used as a form of elastication centuries ago, for shoes, shirt cuffs, waistbands etc.  It was later used more for the decorative effect rather than the practical.

I bow to your skill and your patience....these pieces are incredible.

Is smocking as addictive as it looks? 

I've wanted to try it but I'm afraid of having to hold all that fabric while I stitch.  Do you use an accessory for that?
