So I saw this scrapbook flip calendar kit at Joann Fabrics a year ago and I thought "I can do that without a kit."

Materials/supplies: (I didn't have to buy anything new!!!)
A huge JC Penney's catalog
Thicker cardstock paper... index cards could work but I had a school supply catalog that divided its sections with this heavy thick glossy paper
An old magazine to cut letters out of for the months (catalogs don't have very many exciting letters)
A piece of heavy scrapbook paper for the stand
A good glue stick
6 binder rings (mine were 1'' big, but 1/2'' would have been better... I'm a teacher so the binder rings are a supply I have around that I suppose most people don't)
3 self-adhesive velcro stickers for the bottom of the stand (you wouldn't have to use velcro, I just liked the idea I could store it flat for moving.)
paper cutter, scissors, hole puncher

Basically, I cut the thick paper into cards that were 3 1/2" X 2 1/2" and tore out pictures from the catalog that would be large enough to cover the card for the background.  (Mostly carpets, stacks of sheets, towels, or shirts, curtains, and bedspreads.)  Then I tried to find as many "numbers" as I could... the 4 in the picture is part of a skinny bookshelf.  For the ones I had a tough time with, I cut out the number.  Pretty much the rest is self explanatory... you could probably do these in whatever style you want, and it doesn't have to be recycled catalogs, but I love the look!
*Edit* Size...it is about 4" tall and 8 1/2" and the base is 2". (I didn't actually measure... who does? :-P)
Some more pics...

view from the side...  the date shows July 10... when I'm getting married next year!

no significance, I just like how November turned out

Now, I could do 363 more pictures to show you all the date combinations, but I think that would pic overload... :-)

OMG this is absolutely brilliant. Really. And congratulations on upcoming nuptials. What was the finished size?? Really brilliant. Best thing I've seen done with catalogs.

Thanks for all of the comments already!  Wow! :-)

For those of you that are interested in making one, while driving tonight I realized how I could fix my "rings are too big and falling over" problem... You should use a hole punch for the actual cards, but to insert the rings, don't punch holes!  2 things you could do- mark where you want the holes and just stick the rings through or mark were you want the rings and make a tiny, tiny X cut so that you can stick the rings though.  The whole goal would be to eliminate the wiggle room.  My rings are standing up straight in the picture due to some hidden sticky-tac underneath.

It would be great if everyone could post pictures/a link of the calendar that they've made if you make one (as so many of you have mentioned that you will)!  Happy crafting! :-)
