So I saw this scrapbook flip calendar kit at Joann Fabrics a year ago and I thought "I can do that without a kit."
Materials/supplies: (I didn't have to buy anything new!!!)
A huge JC Penney's catalog
Thicker cardstock paper... index cards could work but I had a school supply catalog that divided its sections with this heavy thick glossy paper
An old magazine to cut letters out of for the months (catalogs don't have very many exciting letters)
A piece of heavy scrapbook paper for the stand
A good glue stick
6 binder rings (mine were 1'' big, but 1/2'' would have been better... I'm a teacher so the binder rings are a supply I have around that I suppose most people don't)
3 self-adhesive velcro stickers for the bottom of the stand (you wouldn't have to use velcro, I just liked the idea I could store it flat for moving.)
paper cutter, scissors, hole puncher
Basically, I cut the thick paper into cards that were 3 1/2" X 2 1/2" and tore out pictures from the catalog that would be large enough to cover the card for the background. (Mostly carpets, stacks of sheets, towels, or shirts, curtains, and bedspreads.) Then I tried to find as many "numbers" as I could... the 4 in the picture is part of a skinny bookshelf. For the ones I had a tough time with, I cut out the number. Pretty much the rest is self explanatory... you could probably do these in whatever style you want, and it doesn't have to be recycled catalogs, but I love the look!
*Edit* Size...it is about 4" tall and 8 1/2" and the base is 2". (I didn't actually measure... who does? :-P)
