I actually posted this in jewelry but then found this section and thought maybe instead- it should be posted here...

I am new to clay...
I was sick pretty much for the entirety of May so I couldn't do a lot of strenuous activity which meant no sewing (use a really old treadle sewing machine which gives quite the workout). Anyway, I nearly went crazy after the first week of doing nothing. Well, I had previously ordered some blocks of polymer clay earlier that week, thinking that I would pick of small sculpting projects here and there. Low and behold, I did about a million different charms and such.

I wanted to show them off since I am quite proud of them and would love to have some feedback/comments on them from you guys!

Pancake Charm

Ice Cream Sandwich Charm

Salmon Nigiri Charm

Cakes- lots of cake charms

Donut Charm

turned into cell charm...

Ridiculous amounts of onigiri (rice ball)

Sushi charms made from a sushi cane that I made

I made a bunch of cute coffee charms here:

turned them all into earrings

A buttload of lollipops

Cookie charms

turned into earrings...

A bunch of pb&j earrings- these were fun to make

turned these two into a cell phone charm

So please let me know what you guys think! I may try to do a couple of clay tutorials if I get enough requests/comments. If you want a tutorial or two, please comment and let me know which ones you would like tutorials on. ^_^

lol, hi again! Ok, I will work on a couple of tutes soon for the sushi cane. And the cakes are really easy and simple. There are lots of different ones that are harder than mine that I plan on trying soon but until then, these will suffice! Thanks for your compliments!

I vote for the sushi cane! They're all so cute, and the thing I love (hate) about polymer clay food is that it looks edible, and now I want cake. Blast!
Great work - and on a slightly off topic note, I friended (?) you on LJ. You're my first!

these are great!!  I would also like to know how you get the metal to stay in the clay? I tried this, but when they came out of the oven and i gave the metal loop a test pull it came right out! just wondering if you had any tips on that.

also if you could show how to make donuts that would be great!

just thought id let you know one trick for cane that took me a while (too long) to figure out, once you have made it, to cut it you must use a very sharp exacto-knife (i dont know if thats how you spell it?) or you will smush the image! (just thought i would let you know!) Cheesy

as far as keeping the metal loops in- all you have to do is bake the clay with the metal loops in them. Then when they come out of the oven, pull the metal hardware out. Once you pull the hardware out, you want to use a very strong craft glue like E6000 or GS Hypo Cement(you want to make sure that it dries clear in case you don't get all of it in the hole) and coat your pin before re-inserting it into the hole that it baked in. Let it dry completely and it will hold firmly.

and for cutting canes- the best advice besides the above stated- using a sharp blade, is to freeze your cane for about 15 minutes before slicing. Polymer clay becomes more pliable and moldable as it is warmed by temperature and or body heat and it hardens as it cools down closer to room temperature. It will never harden completely by cooling down, however it is a good tip to get it cooled off and even freeze it for a little while to make it harder and at the same time- easier to cut. ^_^

I love the sushi ones!

I think the donut charm needs a Homer Simpson charm to match Wink

these are really cute!  I esp. love the PB&J and the pancakes... the butter looks melty! that's really cool.  Also, good work on the sushi cane. I love how everybody on here loves things that look like sushi even if they don't actually like sushi (I love sushi not sure if you do or not  it's just a trend I noticed!).

My favourites are the coffee and the pancake charms.  I especially like how the butter and syrup look glossy and melty on the pancake.

lol, I haven't noticed a trend. I do however, love sushi though. My hubby and I go out for sushi every couple of weeks or so and we try to make it at home as well (but we always make a huge mess).

That would be totally cute. lol

Wow, you were really productive when you were sick!!  Very nice little charms.

I would also like to know how you get the metal to stay in the clay? I tried this, but when they came out of the oven and i gave the metal loop a test pull it came right out! just wondering if you had any tips on that.

reuse, the best way to get eyepins, etc, to stay in the clay (when inserting them before baking into raw clay) is to bend the bottom part of the shank (I actually bend a zigzag) before inserting, then snug the clay back around the shank.  That creates a mechanical hold on the shank which makes it impossible to pull out, and no glue is necessary.  (A hole or a slit can be made in the clay for the shank before inserting.)
If you want to read more about that and other ways to put "hangers-connectors" of various types in polymer clay, check out this page:
http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/pendants_cording.htm
...click on Top Loops and perhaps also on Flat Holes

also if you could show how to make donuts that would be great!

(There are some lessons on making donuts as well as other sweets and breads on this page, for now:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/miniatures.htm > Donuts)

Just one thing about blades to use with clay too, especially for slicing canes... for best results, you'll want to use a very thin, very sharp blade, and also a blade you can hold with both hands while cutting. There are various long flexible or semi-flexible blades that are sold for use with polymer clay, but single-edge razor blades work well as long as the clay or cane isn't too thick, and even wallpaper blades can be used for some things.
There's lots of info on all kinds of blades (and other cutters) that can be used for polymer clay here,
under Blades:
http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/cutters-blades.htm
And info on Cutting Canes in particular, here which also includes cooling them, etc:
http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/Canes--general.htm

These are wonderful!!! I love them all. My only question was what did you use for the syrup and jelly? everything else just looks like basic paint and clay, but those two were translucent and i didn't know what you used.
