Any chance we can get a mobile compatible version of craftster?

If craftster runs off the phpBB engine, there are quite a few mobile skins and add-ons out there already, most just utilizing a new stylesheet that would only be activated if a mobile browser is detected.

As it is now, browsing on a smartphone or the like is next to impossible.  Drop down menus often don't work on the smaller screens since you can't see the whole list at once, and trying to scroll will either close the menu or select something else.  Also, the larger ads have a tendency to fill the screen, and if you try to scroll them away you activate them.

Even just an detect of a mobile browser sending you to a heavily pared down site using menu trees instead of dropdowns would make browsing on a mobile device a lot easier.

I figure I can't be the only one who loves to read craftster when they're out and about, and since I'm starting school in the fall I know I'll have a lot of on-campus down time spent browsing the web on my iphone between classes.

I have a Blackberry Curve 8330.  I find the main page loads up with all of the pictures and ads and things except for the project picture thumbnails.  Once I click on "community" I'm into text-only.  I can't see ANY project pictures on my phone, which sucks, but I've still been keeping busy on it checking out the discussion boards and whatnot.

Also, I've noticed that topics I've turned off notices for under "replies to my posts" still sometimes show up when I check it on my phone. (But only if someone has replied to that thread *after* I've checked that page on my computer.)

So, I agree, a nicer mobile interface would be lovely! ^_^

Yeah I'd love to read it on my iPod Touch but it's pretty much impossible. When I tried, the ads took so long to load, and ate up so much precious real estate (and so many of them are in flash which isn't supported by the iPhone or Touch) that it's just unusable. I'd love a streamlined version for mobile devices too. (And if FOC could perhaps turn off/limit ads on the mobile version too, that alone would go a long way towards making it functional.)

I have an iPhone and would love to have Craftster at my fingertips!  A Craftster app would be awesome, but even just a mobile compatible version of the website would be excellent. Right now it takes a very long time for the page to load. I would be willing to pay for a Craftster app on my iPhone!

I wouldn't pay for an app for it, but a mobile version would be lovely. Smartphones are only becoming more plentiful and I find that I use Ravelry on my iPhone all the time because it is just so easy to use when I need to look quickly at a pattern.

I just installed Opera Mini on my BlackBerry and I like how it displays Craftster better than my IE mobile did.  Now, it's slower, but it shows all of the pictures!

Have you thought about making a iPad/iPhone app for this site? It would be awesome to be able to view the articles and interactive with the forums on a dedicated app.

So I was just taking pictures of my horrendous new project with my iPhone to post in the jewelry forum when I just randomly thought, 'How cool would it be if craftster had an app?" Well, I'd think it'd be cool to upload pics directly to our posts, but thinking about the sheer amount of space provided for each member made me drop the idea like a hot potato. Well, like I said, it was a random thought that I believed wouldn't hurt to bring up in the forums.

Ooh also, I mentioned the app because I couldn't upload to my gallery without my computer because my retarded phone won't allow craftster to upload photos.

On a different forum I'm on they use Tappatalk for the ipod touch & iphone. It works well, I don't know what it's like for pictures because they don't post pictures on the other forum

I would love a Craftster App, too! I use my ipod touch to view craftster all the time, and it works pretty well for me, but it's just incredibly tiny. I think a mobile version would be great. Someday, someday Smiley

an iPhone/iPad app would be so helpful! please let us know if anything comes out? like, even a mobile version?
I'd totally pay for the iPhone/iPad app. I figure, since I've already paid for a FOC membership, I can dish out a few more bucks for an app.
or maybe there could be two versions? free (with a few ads) and paid app, without ads?

I just got a tablet and was setting it up last night, and I had some thoughts as to what I'd like in an Craftster app if there ever was one:

- auto-updates for the "replies to your posts" page
- send the board/thread notifications there
- something that will simplify adding pictures to Craftster hosting right from the device (I wasn't keen on this before, but I'm fairly sure that the camera on my Xoom is better than my regular digital camera... not that that's hard, really...)

An issue I see right off the bat, though, is that each device is different, and making an app for iProducts won't cover the Android ones.  I completely out of my depth here, but hopefully the tech folks will see what I'm getting at: other websites and companies have put together an API and let other people build the apps.  (Honestly, I have no idea if that sentence makes sense... I hope it does!)

I had a brief foray into making an app with Google App Inventor for Android, which was a good bit of fun. I started on a very basic app for Craftster but I need to figure out a few things first!

So I just got an Android about a week ago and am incredibly new to the whole smart phone thing. What kinds of things do apps for websites do? I'm just curious what all you are asking for because I'm clueless. I can get on Craftster on my phone just fine (and after my friend's 12 year old showed me how to enlarge the screen I can read any page happily and basically do anything I can on the computer). Would it have special features or just make it more phone user friendly? I'm definitely for anything that helps people get on Craftster, I just don't really get it Grin

Most of the time it makes the site more user friendly & uses less bandwith

MareMare, don't worry, soon you'll be an Android nerd too Smiley

Just an update on that app I was trying to create for Craftster: I tried making one with the Google App Inventor, but as awesome as that is, it's a very basic site and I just wouldn't be able to do much with it.
Sadly, I don't know Java but hopefully I'll be able to badger someone I know into making a Craftster app Cheesy

I too would love to see an App that would be Crafster exclusive for my Ipod touch.  There are a few "free" apps that allow you to view a few sites (one included craftster), however it only let me view six posts, with no options to search.  I would gladly pay to get a mobile version.  i use the Ipod touch so much anymore that it would be worth it!

I have to say that I am constantly on Craftster on my Android and have absolutely no problem posting, viewing, and also doing any kind of moderating I need to. Not sure what an app could add that the regular site doesn't already do. Maybe your phones are slow? Grin Oh, and I have an unlimited data plan, so the bandwidth isn't an issue for me, I see someone mentioned that as an issue.

I don't know about any other state near me but in Vic, Australia to get an unlimited data plan costs you hundreds each month.

I agree that an app would make Craftster far more user friendly on the phone. While I do have Craftser bookmarked on my iphone, I don't really like to use it through the phone and only get on when I have to check in on a swap or something.  I much prefer the computer. All that zooming in and accidentally hitting the wrong thing...it's just a little tedious.

I don't think you'd be able to get full functionality of the website in an app, but even just something similar to the "most recent with pics" stream where you could scroll through most recent projects and do a quick reply or something. A similar thing for swap galleries would also be sweet. I do think the apps are mostly visual, so it might be tough to get all the discussion and text on the phone, but something would be better than nothing!

PS - I say this with absolutely zero tech savvy, so take it as you will!

How about tapatalk? It doesn't cost anything to install on the forum. The user buys a app (or using a free client) and gets a nice layout and interface.
