so, like many people here, i've been thinking of a tattoo.  i flirted a bit with the thought years ago when i was in college, but i'm a  weenie.  now, a friend is going to get a really kick ass one and suddenly the thought is creeping back in.

i'm married now, and planning on having kids, so i don't want anything too wacky.  here are some ideas, let me know what you think.

**EDIT**
below is the final idea, before the tattoo artist draws it out tattoo-style.

I just love the dandelion clock/ swallow dealy. I think in the end if you've created something that you love already you can't go wrong, can ya? Although I do like me a Picasso...

I like the dandelion and the Picasso too.  I think those would also translate nicely into tattoos given they are made up of bold lines and fewer fussy details, etc.

First:  hercuteness, I love that dandelion image.  It's really truly beautiful.  And even if you go with one, you can always get another later!  I could see the dandelion on the left hip, with the seeds blowing up across the lower back, maybe....

Second:  I'm not as brave with tattoos as some people.  I already have a tattoo of Egyptian heiroglyphs on my back (I'm an anthropologist--not an Egyptologist, of course, but I've been fascinated by it since I was knee-high to a scarab beetle).  I tend to go for the simple, small, script sorts of things.

Nonetheless, I've had a new tattoo planned for ages.  It will come from the following:

It's the ancient language of my family's ancestors (our last name is derived from the name of their ancient empire, the Khazars).  The language is a turkic runiform one.  The picture is from a letter written to a member of the Khazar government, and the signature line in the picture ('I have read') is the only existing example of the Khazar language yet found.  So I plan to stylize the runes a little bit for the tattoo.  It will be particularly salient for me, because I've devoted my life to learning, so "I have read" means a lot to me.

So I know just what I want.  But the trouble, and the reason I haven't gotten it yet, is that I can't decide where on my body to get it.  The one I have is on my lower back, on the left hand side, on the muscly part.  I'd rather not get the new one anywhere where it will be visible while I'm wearing reasonably professional clothes, though if I wind up teaching at a university it's less an issue than in some other professions.  At least, it should be someplace subtle.  I thought about getting it in a vertical line up the inside of my ankle.

I think the sexiest place for a tattoo is down one side of the back of the neck, but I don't have the guts to get it there, especially because I wear my hair pretty short.  In a vertical line down the shoulder blade wouldn't be bad, maybe?  Just alongside where a typical tank top strap would run?  I won't be wearing tank-tops at a professional job, after all.....

Does anyone have any other ideas?

I really like the idea of putting it alongside where a tank strapwould run.. or right under your collarbone maybe?

Ooh, under the collarbone would be interesting!  Maybe a bit visible, though.  Perhaps along one of my hipbones?

i thought about hip to hip. . . but i think i would probably go shoulder to shoulder, kind of high across the base of my neck, maybe?. . .looking at my mom i can see that my hips are destined for wideness, so i don't necessarily want to decorate them.

craft-matic i think your tattoo would look really great on the back of your neck!  i would only worry about looking like a gangster, as that's a common tattoo location for some of the hispanic gangs in my hometown.

stupid gangs.  ruining tattoos for everyone!

I love the Botticelli one, it's gorgeous. And the dandilion/swallows one is really good too.
