I love this. I wonder if you could just glue it with good old Elmers glue and just spray coat it with varnish a few times when you are done. I am soo cheap and lazy. Spray varnish is cheaper than Mod Podge.

I don't see why not.  I just hate spraying because I'm too lazy to go out to the garage.
