Yaar. A Jolly Roger Pirate Cake.

I whipped up this little thang for a friend's groom's cake / birthday cake for her husband-to-be as their wedding day was close to his birthday. He is a proud member of the U.S. military (woot!) but his secret wish is to be a pirate! Hence the cute cake, by which he was pleasantly surprised on his wedding day. Yay for adorable stories and equally adorable cakes!

Yes, the cake is just strawberry cake, strawberry icing, and marshmallow fondant. Disclaimer: Black fondant is SUCH a b!tch to make. However the cake turned out pretty awesome and her husband had a happy birthday and a happy wedding. Why no second tier? Well it WAS the groom's cake AND a birthday cake so one would assume it would be rather large, but when I asked the bride was she sure she only wanted the top tier she insisted, no, she was sure one tier would be plenty, because, and I quote "(they were) going to have so much #@&*ing cake..." and it was true. It seemed like a rather small, intimate wedding, yet they had the most GORGEOUS MASSIVE three-tiered wedding cake (also strawberry, but with cream cheese icing). It was off-white with beautiful fondant swirls. So pretty. So yeah. They didn't need that much more cake.
