My brother has had a rough got at it, but these past few years he has really come around and made a life for himself. I wanted to make him something special to show that I was proud of him, so I decided to try my hand at quilt making. I chose a rag quilt because I thought it would be pretty easy. It both was and wasn't. I know next time to make sure that I use dye magnets in the wash with the quilt if I don't preshink the fabrics....to avoid pink boats.

On with the pictures:

Handsome recipient:

The raggy side: I tried to make it sort of masculine so that he can put it out if he so chooses.

The non-raggy side: If you can't tell, the yellowish ones are Curious George and the light blue ones are boats and waves. The boats got died a bit pink when I washed it.

Close up of the inscription:

It was harder than  I thought it would be, but that's not to say that it's not something I would try again. There are a lot of things I would do differently, but I think it turned out pretty well for a first try.

awww...it came out great and he looks like he really likes it!  It was only as hard as it was because it was your first and you were learning as you went.  Keep it up!

dye magnets pull loose dye to the dyemagnet so it doesnt go back on to other fabrics that are in the wash.

Thank you for the kind comments!

It is definately something that I will attempt again sometime. Next time I may even overcome my fear of binding and try for a more traditional quilt.

It is a lot of work but the end result is so satisfying.
