I don't know how to word this with out sounding like a stuck-up ungrateful person...so please know that i'm not trying to come off that way.

But just out of curiousity, why do people heart items on etsy instead of buy them?

Don't get me wrong, it's flattering to realize that somebody hearted your item (actually, really flattering)... but it's just got me really curious.

mmmm  maybe cause they want to come back to it to possible purchase later.  maybe they just want you to have a thumbs up  but they personally can't afford.  I am not on etsy so I really have no idea.   sounds like what I would do for those to reasons.

I heart stuff as gift ideas for occasions coming up. I heart stuff that I may buy later. It's exactly like the real world, I will think about something for a bit before I actually purchase it, especially if it is expensive. I heart it so I don't forget! I have hearted stuff I know I wont buy, but I am considering a custom request of something similar.

Sometimes I just can't order stuff right at this moment. I am currently in Iraq, but I have hearted several things I will look into buying when I get home. Sometimes I heart the seller, but if it is just one or two items I am interested in, I will heart the item for later reference-- if they are sold I will email and see if they have some more in stock, or whatever.

I agree with the PP. . . for me, it's a kind of wist and shopping list combined.  I especially like to heart suppliers, so I can find them again.

I heart things because I like them, maybe I will purchase them in the future for me or as a gift, for future treasuries and (though I don't like to admit it) for ideas and inspiration (but I WON'T copy!).

When I heart items they appear in a widget on my blog! And so I do that when I think an item deserves attention. I check on the item hearts I get myself regularly through the Craft Cult site, but I never had anybody who did actually come back to me and buy Sad Still I like getting them!

I heart things I think are amazing... and may want to buy later... I heart things that I appreciate and make me smile.

I heart things when I'm just browsing etsy, but don't have a reason to buy them, but just think an item is awesome... and sometimes things I want to put in a treasury later for others to see.

I heart things I might buy when I move...

A lot of times I'll go back through and buy things

I heart items that I really like as a thumbs up for the artist. I heart them to remember them later to purchase for friends. I heart items that inspire me. For me it's a combo shopping list/way of giving feedback to a seller.

I think it just stems from the rise in social networking and it is another way to cross link everything.  Though I look at it as almost like a name drop.  Even if I can't buy the item yet or don't plan on it, I feel like if I heart something, I might create the traffic that person needs to buy it.  It's like wearing a brand name shirt.  I also heart things that I hope my roommates or sister or parents will check out when it comes time to give me presents Smiley

Personally...I can't afford it usually. lol I heart it so that it's there whenever I have the money and I can come back later. At least that's usually it. Or I find it super awesome.

But generally I heart things to create a wish list that I can refer back to whenever I can actually buy something.

Well said. That's how I use it as well. I've also hearted shops I haven't even bought from. I think many of us who browse Etsy would go broke swiftly if we bought everything we hearted. Wink

on one of the etsy teams I'm in somebody said- I can't remember who it was- about the hearting and lack of sales as:

There are a lot of sellers compared to buyers on etsy. If it were a place I imagine it would be a long street of beautiful shops and the shop keepers would go into each other shops and praise the good work, but only occasionally buying anything.
