look at some of the yarn companies' websites (berocco, adriafil, etc.); they have lots of free patterns.

just start hanging out here or at the knitty.com coffeeshop (discussion boards) and you'll start seeing TONS of internet sources.

Your local library is a really good source (if you live in a community that supports the library that is) for books that you can look through before you take the plunge of actually buying them. Personally, I can hardly wait until the next Interweave Knit comes out so you might look for that magazine in your library or book store.
