So, I have been a wee bit obsessed with fabric in general and charm packs specifically lately! Obsessing on etsy, drooling over awesome quilts by whoopdedoo_5 , doing the strip swap, organizing my fabric stash...all these things have helped feed the obsession! I was given a fun charm pack recently (moda Oh Cherry Oh, since you asked! Smiley ), and while cutting some squares from yardage of white on white fabric to go with it, I thought it would be fun to make our own charm packs to swap!

The idea~ Make charm packs in a set of color or theme and send them out to 5 people. I think putting people in groups of 6 would work nicely, experience swappers could have the option of doing more than 1 group. Charm packs could be 40 squares (more or less? that's pretty standard I think?) and people could list colors or themes they would have available. We could either include solids or not, but no more than 2 of each fabric per charm pack, preferably 1 of each fabric (maybe 2 of some that you think are super awesome if you need to round out the numbers?) I'm thinking this would maybe US only for quick turn-around and cheaper shipping?

So, for instance, in my sign-up I might list that I could do a browns and greens charm pack, or a charm pack with leafy patterns, or a certain tone/hue/shade, ie all deep jewel tones? Each person could list what their stash could yield as far as different themes/colors, and people would be sorted into groups according what would give a good variety. If you have a pretty random stash, you could see what you have that would go together nicely...maybe you have lots of polka dot prints, and you could put those all together and then add in prints and solids that match the colors. Maybe a theme could be "girly" with some conversation fabric of high heels, various pink, purples, and reds, and cherry and hearts fabrics! You might want to check your stash, and then pick up a half dozen FQ's to add with what you have for some extra good variety!

All fabric would need to be 100% cotton of course, and preferably good quality. I'm not really interested in getting any Wal Mart fabric for quilting, personally! And carefully cut to be 5 x 5 inches!

Yay? Nay?

This would be awesome but I dont have enough to do that many - maybe 1 or 2. I could if I could use recycled/repurposed fabric.

Actually, cancel that last post.  This would be a good excuse for me to GET a stash going. I could hit up the local quilt stores (or whoopdedoo_5's store hehe) and get a bunch of 1/2 yards and keep a quarter of each for myself and cut up the rest. Smiley

Haha, yeah if you don't need to stash bust you need to stash buy! And I've been collecting fabric for over ten years...most of that time spent sewing random things, ie not quilting so I have some serious large pieces of fabrics!

Count me in on this one.  It will be a great way to see what I can come up with for charm packs and what I would receive.  Sounds fun!

i would love to do this and i have a bunch of coordinating fabrics that would be awesome for this but i live in canada. can i suggest something or maybe just bring attention to it . . . if you opened the swap up to North America then canadians could join. at most there might be 2 canadians to 15 americans (likely less) and the expense of shipping one 40 peice charm pack to canada would be approx 3.00 as opposed to 1.50 for domestic. the pricey shipping would land in the laps of the canadians, but at most it would be about 3.00 per charm pack for us as well, but most canadians who join a swap like this will do so with the understanding that the shipping will be more for them.

eta - i just used usps.com to calculate postage of a large envelope weighing 8 ozs to canada and postage for first class international is 2.85 and from canada to the usa useing canadapost.ca a oversized envelope will go for 3.57.

please dont shut us canadians out of an awesome swap

Ooh, me, me!!   Just to clarify we would make 5 sets of 40 squares to send out, right?
If I can work it around the wedding madness I am all over it.  I am gonna have to get my Wonderland charm pack online since Fabric Depot was out.
Would I be able to use vintage linens?  Would anyone be interested in those?  I just picked up a bunch at some garage sales on Fri.

Sorry, gonna keep it US only for this one for a quick turn around time.

Yep, sending 5 packs of 40 squares was the initial idea, but I'm totally open to suggestions if people think other numbers would work better. Less people in a group or a different number of squares?? I don't know if 30 squares would be better?

What kind of dates are people thinking? I could get this up soon or wait a couple weeks, whatever. I think we definitely only need about 2 weeks to send out after sign-ups are over...maybe less. If I got this posted in the next couple days it would put the send-out date around June 9 I think, allowing one full week for sign-ups. Good, bad, suggestions?

I think vintage lines would be fine! I just want to keep the quality high, you know, not any of that flimsy kinda see-through cotton that you see occasionally.

If you stick with those dates, I will have to sit this round out.  I am going to be out of town for the wedding from the 2nd-11th.  So send outs would fall in the middle of my trip and I don't think I can squeeze in the cutting before that.  Too much stuff to do!!

But def. keep those dates if they work for everyone else and I will join up next go around!  Smiley

I'd be up for this. AND I'd be up for the vintage fabrics for whoever asked.

whoopdedoo_5 is graciously giving me some of her stash, so I'm sure I'll be able to come up with the charm packs for this. If not, I'll be buying to do so and building my stash at the same time.

I'm excited!

I havent heard anyone else say anything about the dates, I am fine pushing it out. How about sendouts on the 22nd? Would that be enough time after you came klum? Everyone else? I'll tweak sign-ups to be a little longer too probably, but will open it up pretty soon I think. Would anyone also be interested in having the option of swapping some fq's along with the charm packs? Not sure how that woulf work as far as putting people in groups, but I'm gonna think about it!

I wouldn't be able to do this until after the 30th. I'm doing a craft show on the 30th of this month and am concentrating on my inventory for that as well as business cards/promotional materials, etc.  Plus, I don't have time/funds to get some fabric together...and the stuff from whoopdedoo_5 is coming THIS weekend.

I'd love to participate...can we try for the first or second week in June?

I think those dates would work for me.  I went back to Fabric Depot today (the outside sale was closed on Sat.)  They have a lot of good stuff on sale.  I want to go back and pick up some things for this swap!

oh man! Do you know what you're going to do with it? Or just had to have it? It is sooo fun! And, it took me a while to realize, but the purse on the cover of Quilts & More magazine (spring 09) is made with those fabrics! I bought 2 1/2 yards total of 3 different fabrics, and I need more.

Sooo, if June 22 works for you and nobody else has any objections than we should be good to go! I am waiting on feedback from a completed swap, but will start sign-ups this week as soon as that slot is open.

Naughty chimes! I had to go to fatquartershop and I bought stuff!

Question for you guys~I just realized that I have a layer cake which co-ordinates with the colors I am probably going to do for this. Problem is, it has that tiny pinking around the edges, so if I cut it into 5 inch squares each one would have two pinked edges and 2 straight edges. Would that be too hard to work with? I totally don't have to use it, but it is nice fabric and would go well with some other stuff. My pinking shears are regular sized, so if I pinked the inner cuts then there would be some loss of fabric, and it still wouldn't match up with the tiny pinking marks on the outer edges. Let me know what ya think please!

Ha, I know, right? The layer cake I just mentioned I pretty much have kept tied up, but I occasionally take it out and look at the fabrics and re-arrange them and tie it back together!

Nope. I haven't bought it yet...I just have it saved in a wishlist cart for safe-keeping...and if I make a killing at my craft show, I'm going to blow it all on the fabric.

Do we have to do pinked edges?  Do they sell a rotary tool that does that? Just curious what you guys think. I'm new to the quilt world so I'm not sure what the diff. is between pinked and non-pinked edges...I'm sure there's a big one though!

No, I don't think you need to pink the edges when you are cutting yardage or fat quarters up for this swap. My plan was to definitely just cut them with my rotary cutter!

But when you buy charm packs or layer cakes they are cut with tiny pinked edges so they don't ravel during transit/in store/whatever I guess. So, if I cut the layer cake into quarters it would be the correct size of 5"x5" but the edges I cut would be straight and the pre-cut edges would be pinked. So that might be weird to work with?

Woo, I hope you rock your craft sale so you can buy tons of fabric!

I love the idea of this swap!  I don't think my stash is large enough though so I may have to purchase some more fabric. June 22 works for me.  May a make a suggestion?  Can we have groups of 4 rather than 6?  It would be better for my budget that way.  Either way I will most likely participate.   Roll Eyes

Also, last summer there was a similar swap, 5" Fabric Charm Swap. http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=250815.0
There were 13 participants and each one sent 10 squares to the 12 others.  There were color guidelines in the questionnaire but I got a crazy hodge podge of fabrics and still have most.  I had wanted to piece them all together for a lap quilt, but it would have been too chaotic for my tastes.  So I really like the idea of each person saying what colors they can send in the beginning!  Cheesy

One more thing, I have two rotary cutters-one straight edge and one pinking.  I can use either, if anyone has a preference.

I looked through the gallery for that swap and there are some crazy fabric sets that were sent out.

Mare Mare- are you suggesting that we send out a coordinating set of 40 charms?  Or just any 40?  I thought I would be sending (and receiving) a coordinating set.  Maybe I just assumed that because that is what you see in the stores.  I don't know that I could do much with a hodge-podge of 40 random fabrics.

No I definitely meant coordinating. Trying to replicate the fun selections you see in the stores out of your stash! For instance, I could take my brown and greens and find 40 that went well together...if I didn't have 40 I would probably buy a few more fq's (or yardage lol) to round it out. Or, alternately, buy  some fq's or yardage that go well together and match stuff in your stash that looks good with it. Yeah, I don't want 40 completely random squares either. I did mention that some of the 40 could be repeats or solids or tone on tone that could go together, but the majority should be different prints. I think I had some other suggestions further up, not necessarily having to be color-co-ordinated but somehow went together...all cherry fabric or a few focus type fabrics with stuff that went with them. What I'm thinking is definitely more structured than the swap that imafundork linked above. Everyone would list their "theme" or colors when sending in the questionnaire and that would help determine groups.

Groups of 4 would mean that you would be sending and receiving 3 packs...does anybody else prefer it that way? And I totally didn't know they made pinking rotary cutter blades, that is very cool! Do you know if I can just buy a different blade to fit the rotary cutter I already have, or is it a special handle thing to start with?

You can buy a pinking replacement blade for almost all rotary cutters.  I know I have seen one for mine.  I personally see no need to pink the edges.  It would just be extra work for those who don't have a pinking blade or shears.  Also I wouldn't mind have two pinked edges and two straight edges if you wanted to cut up that layer cake, Mare Mare.  (It has some great fabrics!)

I am glad you were thinking coordinating fabrics also.  I have been scouting the outdoor sale at Fabric Depot and I think I know what I want to pick up for this swap.

As far as group numbers, I am fine with either 6 or 4.  I think if we did groups of 4, I would sign up for two and if we did 6, then I'd probably only do one group.

Oh ok, that's good to know! I haven't hit the outdoor sale yet, it closes like an hour before the rest of the store I think and got there too late the other night.  Groups of 4 it is, and you can sign up for multiple groups if you want! That will make it easier to match up colors too I think.

I love that layer cake! It is moda cotton blossoms (I think that's the name) if anyone is curious Wink

Also, I wasn't feeling well today or yesterday, so I indulged in a little online retail therapy!  I ordered the charm pack and jelly roll in "cotton candy" here...loving the bargain bin on this website! Ordered last night and got email today that it has shipped out already! http://www.quiltersbiz.com/QBStore/catalog.aspx?name=Cotton_Candy&cid=173&pid=103 Also got the Layer Cake and Honey Bun in Sultry by Basic Grey for Moda...been wanting some of that line, and lookit that, it's on sale! http://www.fatquartershop.com/store/stores_app/Browse_dept_items.asp?T=1&Store_id=499&page_id=17

I should be getting feedback tomorrow, so I will get the sign-up ready to post sometime tomorrow. If anybody has any more ideas/changes/suggestions please let me know before then! Should there be a limit of being in 2 groups? Or however many people want to do? If you are doing multiple groups you would probably want to do different charm packs...or I guess you could do the same, just thinking out loud about how to match people into groups!

I'm thinking they should probably be coordinating fabrics so people can do stuff with them...otherwise it's not busting your stash, it's just trading your stash.

Thanks for doing groups of 4!  Grin

The main appeal of this swap for me was getting (and giving) coordinating fabric unlike the previous fabric charm swap!  I'm going to have to look through what I have and see what grouping I can offer.  More than likely it will be bright colored florals (pink, green, aqua, etc).  My problem is that my stash is so eclectic it's hard to make anything from it!  But I'll pick up some fqs to work with.  No worries....I won't send a crazy hodge podge!  Shocked

I'm going to check out all of the links y'all have posted now. And maybe do some online shopping...
