I've recently rediscovered shrinky dinks.... The last time I had used them was probably in the early 90's. I think they were Suzie's Zoo shrinkies.

Anyhoo, I've been making charms and stuff and not really doing much else with them. I thought it was about time to combine my jewelry-making skills with the shrinky dink skills so recently rediscovered. Here's what I've come up with within the past 3 days:

This charm bracelet is made of the tiniest little shrinky tags...I had to display it on a crocheted ball...the colors went so well together.

paying homage to the mouse of mice. I added some swarovski, too.
alice and wonderland themed, cheshire cat & dodo bird not forgotten!!!
a little larger cheshire cat pendant with crystals

I guess that will be all for now...I did some earrings, too. Perhaps that will be another post.

EDIT: Here is the earring post! http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=304932.0

The shrinky sheets you can get a Joann's (I think they are called "curiosity kits") are rough on one side, smooth on the other. To get the 2 layers, I use a fine point sharpie to draw the main darker image on the smooth side, then I use a rubber stamp on the rough side for the background with a lighter color

Very well done. How do you bake them in such a way that the image doesn't smudge? I usually bake mine coloured side up...

I bake them stamped side (rough side) down. If I let them dry well enough, they don't smudge much at all. I keep the sharpie drawing side up, because that image will usually at least partially come off in the oven if face down. Once that side is done and cool though, the image is totally stuck on! Kind of slightly embossed, too, which is a little bonus.

Okay, what is Shrinky Dink and how do you do it?  That's soooo cool!

They are the most wonderful magical things in the world....for the moment  Wink

They pretty much are sheets of plastic that you can draw on and cut shapes out of, then you put them in the oven for a few minutes and they squirm and wriggle, then shrink about 1/3-1/4 of the original size. You can make all sorts of things out of them.

You can buy packs of them at Joann craft stores, or online!

Using the punches was genius. I really like the shape. It seems to be perfect for little charms. Great job, beautiful work!!
And, do you really hand-draw all those images yourself or are you tracing them? Just wondering b/c they're beautiful. (someone may have already asked this and I missed it, sorry!!)

Always before shrinkage! I use a little hole punch. It's smaller than a normal one. I think it's 1/8"!

I buy my shrinky stuff at joann.com! The only craft store we have where I live is Michaels, and they don't carry shrinky dinks anymore! So I have to buy them online. The brand I use is "Curiosity Kits" I think...

What did you do for the images?  Did you just draw all that on there or use a temporary tattoo or what?
I just trace or draw images with a fine-point sharpie marker! Easy as pie.
