Thanks everyone!

Marie-lynn: the edges almost drove me to distraction Cheesy I couched wire down onto fabric in a hoop, then really couched it down, covering all of the wire. Working with only two  strands of thread it took an age (it would have been a smoother, less bulky finish if I'd used only one but I was working on a time limit!).

   The barbed wire is 0.8mm steel wire. I had made the barbs individually around needle nosed pliers and then glued them onto the main wire. I tried all manner of twisting the wire together to avoid glueing, but just couldn't get the turns tight and neat enough at that size.
