One of my good friends and her sister were having a joint baby shower so I checked the registry to see what they wanted.  On one of the registries I saw baby sling ($80). I thought, "I can make that" and started searching craftster.org and a few other sites. The most helpful one I found was http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/index.html  After much research on rings, I went to my local "Family Farm and Home" store (Grand Rapids,MI) and bought two 3" heavy duty rings. They don't weigh that much and are made to hold farm animals, so I figured a baby was safe. I might order nylon ones next time I make a sling, but due to time constraints I chose to buy these locally.  Next I went to BEd Bath and BEyond and got this really nice twin sheet. It was 500 thread count, flat, chocolate brown (because we all know its going to get puke and poop on it at some point  Smiley ) and only $13. I cut it in half and then made it to the size that the online pattern called for.    I bought 1/4 yard colorful fabric for each and added a hidden pocket/pouch with velcro closure on each.  I think both came out great.  I think it would be fun to make another one with an adult print instead (something Amy Butler-ish).
Each sling cost less than $13, but that was because I used 1 sheet for 2 slings.
Thanks for looking  Grin
 Michelle

Make sure that the rings are high (like you are wearing a broach).  Also, it is very important that it spread across your back and makes a cape across your shoulder. Place baby in sling, tighten up and go on your way J

Looks great!  And great job with all the various info.  Did you check out www.thebabywearer.com?  That's a great site for all sorts of info and inspiration!!

And just FYI if you make more in the future, you can order rings made especially for slings at www.slingrings.com. Lots of different colors, and they are really light and really strong and various different sizes.  Not too pricey, either, just the issue of the time for shipping.

I (kind of) wish my kids were still little enough to benefit from slings, especially when I see cool ones like yours!

This is such a great idea, the hidden pocket sold me.

My best friend and my cousin are both pregnant, so I might just make a couple of these myself.
