ok.. I admit..I do it..ok..there I said it..and last night as I unmolded and licked the after taste of a mixture of soap and FO made me run my tongue under the faucet..

I know I am NOT alone..but I maybe the ONLY one brave enough to say 'I am a soap licker'

the lack of zap somehow makes me feel happy though..so if I must the licking will continue on..

Wouldn't a pH strip work (and save your tongue some distress)? Wink

Aw, we love you hon! Kiss kiss! Honestly, I never even heard about the lick test until I had been making soap for a couple years...I also think pH strips are kinda worthless. I HAVE licked a couple bars, but it was pretty disgusting and I never felt a zap, so I gave it up. I think there are a lot of visual cues to tell if your soap is lye heavy, and my skin is so sensitive that I can tell by using it if it's not cured yet.

ok..I only lick once in awhile..I licked yesterday because of the cherry almond..maybe I was hoping it was fudge..haa!!

One of my first batches I made made me see the visual cues of questionable soap so if it doesnt look like that one I know I am all good..it was sparkly pretty-not in a good way..

it is disgusting..and after I now have unloaded my dirty laundry here..itll probably be the last time I lick..haa!!

wow,craftster is like confession..haa!!!

It's ok, at least now I know we don't need to have a soap licking intervention, ala How I Met Your Mother Smiley

I was a soap licker for years; I only recently bought pH strips from Bramble Berry (or was it MMS?). I'm with you that the lack of zap is the only thing that makes me feel better.

Have you ever gotten zapped though? FUN times! I've only had it happen once or twice (usually on test batches that I never have been able to measure correctly) but wow will that wake ya up in the morning!!  Lips sealed

<------------ Soap licker, as well. Never been zapped though. I am sure that it would be umm, electrifying. Ha. Corny jokes late at night!

Has anyone ever heard the chicken feather test?? I was at a craft show and an old man was asking me how I knew there wasn't too much lye in my soap. So, for fun (and truth) I told him I lick it. He told me that his grandfather made soap and he tested it by using a chicken feather and if the soap didn't "eat it" then the lye level was ok....

Anyone heard of this? I **love** the random things you find out from talking to the elderly.  Grin

Because it's ME, I went and looked this up:

http://www.countryfarm-lifestyles.com/make-lye.html

The gist I got was that it comes from having to make your own lye from wood ash, you put the chicken feather into the mixture and if it eats the feather, that means it is strong enough to use for soap making. Which is, in a way, genius.  Smiley
