Cat sofa, with semi-tutorial!

hehehehehehehe, so, finally, in the middle of the night, I've got a tutorial up... it looks pretty enough, but it's not... I made a mistake, but I mentioned that mistake in the text. And I've already worked out a few other mistakes, and I'm tired... Hope you're satisfied anyway.

Wow thanks! Now I need to find foam somewhere (do you think it 'has' to be foam? Can't I just use pillowstuffing-stuff? Or will it be to soft?) and study the tutorial a bit.

If you use pillow stuffing it will get deformed fairly quickly. Foam will keep it's shape even after many years of use, while pillow stuffing will sag and get lumpier with time. If you use that kind of stuffing you'd need some super starch for the fabric, and even that will get worn down far more quilckly than foam would. It might be difficult to get the foam though, I know. I had the luck of having a store here selling only foam(!) when I made that, but it's gone now...
Now mind you, I'm foreign, so there is a slight chance I'm using the word "rubber foam" a bit out of place, since a lot of stuff tends to go by the same name.., but what I mean is that stuff you put in some chair seats, and those ergonomical pillows. I'm sure you know what I mean...

I'm foreign myself (dutch) I understad the kind of foam you mean. I know exactly what I am going to do.. I'm going to wait for someone to throw out their sofa (A lot of times you can find old sofas on the street, ready to be picked up by a garbagemachine), steal a pillow and cut out the foam. or buy it, if I can find it. But I don't think that will happen.

Well, I think you could always look for some place that reupholsters furniture, or makes seats for chairs maybe... I know there are "stores" which will make custom cushions for boats, since most boats have differently shaped beds - they might sell foam.
And if you can't find any, try with the pillow stuffing! But then I suggest you make the armrests and the back a lot thicker, so it'll stand a bigger chance of surviving

I MADE THE SOFA!!!



It was quite hard to make! And I have to add that the measurements for the foam you posted are too large (or the measurements for the fabric is too small..) so I had to re-cut it a bit. Also, the sewing part was sometimes hard to understand when actually doing it yourself, so I just did it a little different (what I felt was right). Well my cat is far too fat for this sofa and she hasn't really been on it yet, but she is looking, sniffing and walking around it. She almost got seated and when I ran to get my camera she was gone. Oh well, maybe tomorrow, she's having a bad day anyway (scratching all the time, running like crazy..) My the way, cutting foam is so horrible! My hands felt dead after doing that. But it was still fun to make.

Well, I'm rather rough with the foam personally, so big foam tends to fit small spaces, it just makes it "harder"... all I know is that I atleast tried to write the same sizes for both fabric and foam. When I made it it was all haphazard. I just made a cross-thingy which was a bit bigger than the foam should be, all around, then I just kinda sowed it into a load of attached boxy shapes...
the edges are all just folded like some sort of package wrapping and sowed together... and it was a long time ago *sigh* I didn't have any problems then, but alas - what inspiration can do, and what don't we forget about the things we just do on a whim...

I was in luck, I cut the foam with the band saw in woodshop class

Ohh! It's time for her little beauty sleep (11:00am - 3:00pm) and what do I see?



She's loving it! I also tuck a tiny bag of tea with valerian herbs in it, cats love that and so does she.
