these would be great made from wrapping paper off of gifts, wonder if it would be better to cut strips wider and fold more times to make them heavier.

This is so inventive! I've been trying to get rid of my old magazines, and i think this would be a perfect thing to do with them!  May make a few pencil pots and some extra storage for random knitting things. ;]
