kangaroo mosaic table top

This table was a long time comin. It began it's life as a glued on, lighter burned, scraped up coffee table at my friend's college apartment.



I had my grandpa put an edge on the top so the resin would stay in when poured. Then I glued down one kangaroo and it sat in my living room for a year.

I made a covered top for it so it wouldn't look too goofy while in progress. But it was equally goofy itself:



So we tossed that, and then, in under a week it went from that to this:





I put aussie coins on a few of the major cities.



The glass was glued down, then grouted, then resined. easy as pie. It's very heavy before, now with glass, grout, and resin, it's a solid ton.

If I were to do it over again, I would use uniformly sized pieces. It saved time obviously to use the bigger pieces, but seeing it as a whole completed, I know I would do it differently. C'est la vie.

Every time I look at it, it gets better and better! At first I just loved the kangaroos, then I realised they were jumping across Australia!!! The coins on the cities though made it perfect!! I want one!!
Amazing work. I can't even begin to imagine how much effort this would take. I'm in awe.

It looks great, and I love how all the big pieces make it really... flowing and swoopy and curvy. It's more wild and free, and that's how I see Australia, at least.

Also kudos for including Tasmania.  Those Taswegians get mighty pissed off when they're left off the map.

Very nicely done! The colors of glass look good with the wood color, and the design is well thought out. Great job!

This is great!  How deep did you pour the resin? 

I used all I had and came out with barely enough. It's less than a 1/4" . In fact, theres one place  where a piece of glass sticks above the resin. When I get my hands on some more resin (I used Envirotex Lite) I'll put down another layer.

Thank you for mentioning the woodgrain. I was so torn about whether I should paint the top or just put down the clear glass. I still don't know how I feel about it and if I were to do it over again, I STILL wouldn't be able to decide.
