I'm not very good at knitting useful items. I tend to gravitate to sillier projects like gnomes, or knitted versions of my favourite bands, but when I saw this pattern 3 years ago, I knew I had to have it. Sadly, I'd just started knitting and was far to impatient to bother with things like gauge, needle size or seaming, and my first attempt at this was so disgusting I left it under my bed for 3 years in the hope it would disappear and save me from the shame of frogging it and starting again. Nope. It didn't.

I recently found the pattern again and the same lusty feeling crept into me. Before I knew it, I'd bought 3 skeins of Rowan Big Wool, knit a swatch (see how I've grown?!) and had cast on for the first tie.

I frigging *love* this hat. Never mind that it's now getting to the start of summer in Suffolk, and that I actually got a little bit sunburnt whilst knitting this in the park - not to mention some very strange looks - I don't think you can ever have too much knitwear. Sun be damned!

Just to let you know, I am actually dressed in these photos.. it's just a strapless dress, so I look nuddy. Sorry!

The tails, knotted and tossed jauntily over one shoulder...

And just because I loved it so so much, I made another in a kinda off-cream/green (called 'Souffl', which made me giggle!)

C+C very welcome!

Where's the pattern from?  I bet my 3 year old would love one of these for next winter (and I'm kind of tempted to make one for me, too. It gets cold on those dog walks).

Thanks guys! Took it for its first proper outing in windy Glasgow yesterday, and it does the trick - toasty warm, and my ridiculous fringe doesn't move an inch!

Each of the tails are 61 inches long, minus the pom-pom.

The pattern is from Rowan's Little Book Of Big Accessories, which seems to have been discontinued. Sad.

Edit - turns out it's also in Rowan's 'The Next Big Thing' book too!
