My brother got married last month and I wanted to make him and his wife a gift for their house. I wanted to make them something video-game-geeky but also kind of pretty. I ultimately decided to make coasters decorated with drawings of various Nintendo gaming systems -- 4 consoles and 4 hand-helds -- ranging from the original system to the most recent. My brother has owned most of these systems and has an obsessive eye for detail, so hopefully he'll like my creation!

(click to see a bigger version)

The details: used 4" ceramic tiles. Did the drawings (from photos, of course) using a Sharpie and colored pencils. Covered the tiles with scrapbook paper and then decoupaged the drawings on, using a combination of Tacky Glue and Mod Podge. Covered with a few more coats of Mod Podge, a few coats of polyurethane spray, and glued cork to the bottom so it wouldn't be scratchy.

Then I made a box for them out of cardboard, and covered it with more scrapbook paper using more Mod Podge. I plan to give this a few coats of polyurethane spray tomorrow.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, although in retrospect I wish I had done the drawings a little bigger and I wish I hadn't glued the NES on crooked!
