So i have been working on this design for just a simple but big messenger style bag for quite a while now... i even made a muslin one before hand to test out the design...  I've used a bunch of tutorials from craftster to make the zippered pockets, and the zip top, and the adjustable strap... and made my own directions for this bag Smiley

The outside is duck cloth--interfaced with fusible fleece and some med. weight interfacing, and the inner cotton fabric just has fusible fleece.

The size is about 16 1/2" wide, 11 1/2" tall, and 4" deep.

Here are the pics: let me know what you think!

Tutorial Time Smiley

Alright so i had made some notes while making a practice bag--i scanned them and added some notes as well as some pics i took...

I didn't go into too much detail--as long as you understand how to make a basic bag you'll be fine with this!

I used these tutorials to help me :

zipper pocket tute:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=11808.0
adjustable strap tute: http://nicolemdesign.blogspot.com/2008/08/adjustable-strap-tutorial.html
zip top flaps idea from this tute: http://pinoyinoz.blogspot.com/2008/07/tutorial-messenger-bag-with-zip-top.html

I tried to make it as clear as i could without going into too much detail..... any questions just ask!

Oh and if make one please post it i want to see it Smiley

Good work!

I like this design a lot.  My best friend is in love with this style.  She can't find a purse like this anywhere.  Anyway, you could give a tutorial on how to make it?  Her birthday is coming up soon.  Or could you make one to sell in khaki corduroy?   Smiley

holy shite, that is EXACTLY the type of messenger bag I want/will make after exams. I love its details, the awesome zipper going off the side Smiley sooo awesome. As a side note, does that little clasp thing holding the flap to the bag get annoying since it's on the underside? (Maybe i'm just over-analyzing this Tongue but i do love my messenger bags)

Awesome bag. Really beautiful. Would make a great laptop bag too, with additional padding.

That looks great! I especially love the closure. Is duck cloth like canvas? Do they sell it at regular fabric stores?

Ok, usually I don't give a rip one way or another about totes and purses, but this bag is just exactly what I need for my fledgling business.  You have done an awesome job of making something that is actually workable.

I also almost never ask for a tutorial.  I think it's rude to ask, but I am going to make an exception.  I don't sew, but I know someone who would make this bag for me if I had some kind of directions.  So, will you be writing up a tutorial?

Or, would you be willing to do a personal swap for one?  PM me if you are interested.  I can do some great woodwork.

This looks like a great and functional messenger bag! Love all the pockets. I too, was wondering if that little hook would get annoying since it is in the middle of the flap.

That looks great! I especially love the closure. Is duck cloth like canvas? Do they sell it at regular fabric stores?

Duck cloth is an awesome heavier weight sturdy canvas. Normal canvas is 7oz, duck cloth is 10 oz. I make my messenger bags out of duck cloth exclusively. Jo-Ann Fabrics carries it in their home decor section, and they just came out with some great new colors like pink and purple.

Thank you. I was beginning to wonder if anyone was going to answer me. I'll have to check out Jo-Ann's online.

OK that is an awesome bag! I'm so trying to make this!

If I wanted to make it bigger do you think it would work by just enlarging the pattern pieces or would that make the bag hang weird?

i think you could probably enlarge it... i don't think it would hang weird, as long as there was enough stuff in the bag or you used interfacing!  I'd love to see pics if you make it!

This is an awesome bag!  I saw another that rocked, but this one ROCKS!  I do need another bag for the rest of the semester, and will definitely give this one a try.  As soon as I find the fabric; I live in a fabric hungry area, it seems.  Anyway, this ROCKS!
