Working on a silly hat...

I'm trying to make that hat... and I have no idea where to begin, other than just starting on creating a bunch of mock ups until something works (which is how I do most everything, but I'm running out of time before I need it finished)

I'm also wondering if people think I should create shoulder pads or some kind of corset that would give me the more anime triangular body shape...

I'm asking here rather than the anime costumes board I usually go on because people here tend to be a bit more... real. (not to put anyone down, but sometimes I don't want to cause myself pain to look like a 2d character)

I have the trenchcoat, it just needs some help with having lost all its buttons over the year, and I made the tie using a Japanese pattern book.

 I'm not positive, but I think that Vogue patterns has similar wide brimmed hats.  I would think it would be a rather difficult tedious task to try to get the hat right, and might be worth spending a couple bucks on the pattern.
And, yeah, I would think some massive shoulder pads.  A corset, if that's not too much pain for ya.

Another member here linked to this free patern-generating software -- http://www.wildginger.com/wildthings/ .  There's a hat pattern in it, and you can make the brim any width you like!  It should turn out just right with a little tinkering, I think.  Use some super-stiff interfacing in the brim.

a little off topic, but what show is that from? and why are you making the costume??? i totally see where you're coming from with the "real" issue! i went to an anime convention last year, and oh my gosh, some people there were CRAZY!!!!!!! wow! but i'll probably go again this year, it was so fun!!!!! i actaully was gonna do a ha form that wildthings thing, but i never found the right fabric   oh well, someday!

The show is Get Backers. It should be out in the US in 6 months to a year depending on how high on the translation priority list it is for the company that owns it.
