So, my daughter's first birthday was coming up, and I decided I wanted to craft with food, not just decorate a rectangular cake, but a cake shaped like something.  It's my first attempt at something like this, so I was really pleased with the results!

This is how it looked pre-icing:

I baked a cake in a 9X9 silicone pan, which was really nice when I had to get the cake out of the pan, and then I cut 4 wings.  I used cupcakes for the body segments, and a small round aluminum pan for the head - the head wasn't planned, I just had too much batter and not enough things to bake it in, so it worked out well!  I really wanted the background to be chocolate icing, not white, but I ran out of time! My husband even helped with the colourful sugars. I didn't plan enough time, and I still had to prepare food for lunch and do more cleaning!  The last minute cleaning didn't happen, but the lunch did, and the cake was a hit!  My daughter didn't like it, but she made a mess for a photo opp, which was the important thing. Next time I'll decorate the cake the night before...

I'd say you did a pretty good job on this cake.  It looks just like a dragonfly, and very colorful.

I'm glad you didn't use chocolate icing.
