I am a 1st grade teacher and one of my students from last year had a students who's brother was diagnosed with leukemia in August.  When you have students you don't get to know just them but their family as well.  This is a wonderful family, and I think a lot of them.

The school decided to put together a container to give to the family to let them know that we are thinking of them.  I decided I wanted to make him a little quilt.  He is a HUGE UNC fan and I had recently made another quilt for a friend and had some UNC fabric leftover...

This is what I came up with...

I used a Rail Fence pattern, each block was 9 inches x 9 inches.  I really love how it came out!

Here is the back, lots of UNC fabric!

I had a time with the binding... it is something I have never done before.  I bought Wrights Double Fold Bias Quilt Binding.  How in the world do you attach this stuff?  I watched a few tutorials for binding on line and none used pre-made quilt binding.

I love a rail fence quilt.  This one is especially special.  Love the backing! (Congrats to UNC for making it to the finals in the NCAA tournie).  You have made a huge impact on this child and family.

I really like the way this turned out.  Clean and simple, but not boring.

As for premade quilt binding, I had so much trouble the last time I tried to use it, and no luck finding better instructions, that I ended up just ironing it flat into one long bias strip and then following the instructions in the Denyse Schmidt book - much easier!

SandyBradley- Thank you so much for your kind comments!  Go Heels!

Just Plain Goose- Thank you for this!  I thought I was an idiot for not being able to deal with that stupid binding!  I think that the Denyse Schmidt book is on my must buy list!

I wanted to share the whole bucket that was giving to this brave little boy.  I work with some awesome generous people!

Here is how I presented it:
