here is one of my first completed projects where i spun, dyed and knit it! it is a hat for my two-year-old daughter, azzurra.

i dyed the roving with kool-aid and then spun it on my homemade drop spindle. i free-styled the pattern for the hat, and added the earflaps at the end because i thought they'd be cute. the were niot meant to roll (i''m still a beginner when it comes to knitting), but i thought it looked cute all rolled up, plus it keeps them out of her face when it's not cold out enough to warrant tying them up...

That's amazingly adorable.  Good job with everything--spinning, dying, knitting!  It's absolutely beautiful!

Aww i love knitted objects with a thick/thin yarn.

And that color combo rocks with the ear flaps

(wait for it...people are going to start asking for tutorials any time now!)

That is SO pretty--and I LOVE the rolling flaps!! Where did you get the roving, if you don't mind my asking? And how did you make your drop spindle (and whats a drop spindle?)? Your yarn is really beautiful! Great job!

thanks to all for the compliments..
tere, i bought the roving at LK yarns in halifax, which is funny considering the things i said about that place in my post to the halifax thread... it is fairly priced there, yo buy it undyed by the ounce. you can get a pretty big bag for 10 bucks. other knitting stores would probably have it, and there are many places to but it onliinee, including ebay..

a drop spindle is a tool for spinning fibres into yarn that is thousands of years old.
http://www.joyofhandspinning.com/spindle-types.html  (this website also has instructions on how to make and use one..)
i made mine out of a pre-drilled wheel designed for a toy that i bought at kent with a 1/4 inch dowel and a cup hook. i will post a picture of it soon..

Wow!! Thank you!! So would you say it saves money to buy the roving and spin it yourself? I foresee another hobby in the works...Smiley
