I am SO glad you posted this! It's so perfect because just yesterday my bf and I were wondering about how the hell to stop my two little beasts from destroying the new couch we'll be buying soon when we move.  The only easy option is that fugly sticky-paper they make to deter cats. I was ready to get some of those big, pliable aluminum sheets to cover the side but buttons are infinitely better. So I am definitely using this idea, even if it takes 10 hours and $50 in buttons!
