I made this rattle from clay. The rattle bits are small scraps of metal.

Metal?? I didn't know you could use metal!! I've been making those, too (except not as decorated as yours) and I was taught to use bits of clay wrapped in newspaper and tucked inside.

We had used raw clay bits and had to wrap each one individually but I decided to dry out a bunch of little balls of clay so I could wrap them all up in one piece of newspaper. It worked!

What kind of metal do you use? Obviously one that withstands high temps, but any specific kind?

Hmmm...I've never had any problem with bits of clay added (without wrapping in newspaper I mean. What does that do, btw? Doesn't the newspaper burn out before anything else gets fired?). I guess if you're worried, you could bisque the bits first...

Rattles are so fun to make, no?

The newspaper is to prevent the bits from sticking to the walls. Hmmm, you've never used newspaper and your stuff comes out fine? I'll have to try that.
