Coffee Table...ugly

Ok, these were purchased for me by my parents, only i think it is really ugly

any ideas how i can make it nicer?
i am more a clean lines, modern, ikea girl.

If it's real wood you could sand it, paint it glossy black or white and decoupage (sp?) something cool onto the inlays in the centre. You could probably still do that if it's laminate and just seal the hell of out it.
They're not that bad really, just need a bit of personalisation!

Yup, paint them.  Black, white, laquer red, anything but what they are. And, good for you.  Too many people don't have the courage to make something else out of ugly gifts.

Yeah paint will look the best.  Especially black.

You could also add stainless steel tops if you wanted cleaner lines.

Just found weird contact paper on amazon that looks like stainless steel, faux leather and a variety of other colors / patterns / textures.
