THe lucky ones who do win the challenges...do they have to report their prize winning like pay taxes on it or something? or is that only on prizes when they reach a certain dollar amount? lol, i have no idea and like i say...never won anything either! what say you mods? or past winners? Smiley

Wow, I'm not actually sure.  I would venture to guess that the monetary limit is far below claimable amounts, but I'm not sure at all.  I'm sure some tax-savvy membe will come along and clarify this for us!

Yes, you do. However, you report it as part of your income, and your taxes are calculated from the total. The IRS has it on this page:
Quote
Prizes and awards

Subject to certain exceptions, the cash value of prizes or awards won in a drawing, quiz show program, beauty contest, or other event, must be included on the tax return as taxable income.

Taxpayers must also report the fair market value of merchandise or products won as a prize or award, as taxable income.

However, I'm fairly sure that it would cost them more to audit you than a $20 t-shirt actually costs anybody, and I wouldn't guess that most people in the U.S. know any of these rules.

Here's another page with some similar information on it:
Taxable and Nontaxable income

I found this, which was interesting:
Quote
Found property.   If you find and keep property that does not belong to you that has been lost or abandoned (treasure-trove), it is taxable to you at its fair market value in the first year it is your undisputed possession.

Heh, I wouldn't sweat it, though. I highly doubt most of the country is even aware of most of the things they have to report (and I'll bet the government doesn't remind them unless they have to report huge amounts). According to that publication, you're also legally obligated to report both bribes and income from illegal activity in your income as such, but I think they main reason that rule's on the books is so they have an alternate way of taking in criminals when they can't pin anything else down on them (ex: Al Capone).

Of course, in other countries, YMMV.

OMG. I started collecting eggs at the thrift store the other week, and bought about 200  hundred yesterday on clearace. Well, the girls at work know what I'm doing, and they decided to bring me all their eggs, too. And what they bought on clearance. My husband is not impressed.   Grin Grin Grin
