My husband and I are considering moving to Youngstown (for a job).  Can anyone tell me what it's like for the crafty?

Well, I find the greatest thing about being crafty and a Youngstowner is that there's fairly easy access to Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Akron, and Canton (ranging from 45min to an hour and a half drive) which have way better shopping (and I say that being a resident of Youngstown). Nearby (like 20min drive) Warren also has some really cool stores. There are a fair number of thrift stores around, and consignment shops as well. As far as new supplies, there isn't a lot of choice as if you're going to more urban Mahoning County, the (mostly) only options are located in Boardman but there are the basics of JoAnn's, Michael's and Hobby Lobby. There are also scattered independant fabric stores as well.
As far as I have ever known, Youngstown is pretty welcoming to the crafty (there are a million craft shows/sales everywhere all year long), but I haven't seen too many crafting groups or gatherings, though I'm pretty antisocial, so there are probably a ton I don't know about.

Hello! I'm new to the forums, but I saw this topic and had to reply. I'm from Youngstown. My mom used to work at Cord Camera in Howland, OH [I was once a teen teacher there], but they've since closed, resulting in her losing her job.

We are looking for new Scrapbook stores in the area! We have been to Archivers in Fairlawn, and another scrapbook store in Butler, and also Hobby Lobby. Where do you shop?

Welcome cutintu2! I don't scrapbook but I think Hobby Lobby has the biggest section around. Pat Catan's has some stuff too.

Would anyone out there be interested in forming a crafty group?

Thanks, drpop, for the info.  We're moving to Youngstown in mid-August and I'm happy to hear about crafty happenings there.

Basementcrafter and froggmomma, I would be interested in the other sites and/or meeting up with fellow craftsters.  I could do a stitch-n-bitch, though I seem to just keep reknitting the same scarf and frogging it over and over!

i wasn't sure what the rules were about posting links... it's called meetup.com, you just pick your city and look around. There's a stich'n'bitch-type meeting monday the 13th at panera in boardman, the one by barnes and noble. I think it starts at 7, but the details are on the site. hope to see you there!
