I only have those ugly wooden ones!  LOL

One thing I like about the wooden hoops is that you can glue ribbon around the outer edge of them and that really snazzes them up Smiley.

And I don't even have a hoop!

I did have one in Australia but I rarely used it. It left permanent marks on the fabric. Yucky.
Here in China the women cross-stitch, but they don't use a hoop. It doesn't really bother me as I never really used one anyway.

They say the key to not getting permanent marks on the fabric is to loosen the hoop when you are not working on the project.  In fabrics, this works well.  But I have to say I have ironed aida cloth (used for cross stitching) and it often still has a girl in it when done.  Sad

I had no idea they don't use hoops in China!  That is some interesting bit of information.  I wonder if that is true for most of the Asian terrirories???  My brother brought back some gorgeous embroideried pieces from Korea I think it was years ago for myself and my mother.  We thought they were gorgeous, but then he told us they were done by hand.  I was so shocked.  These pieces are soooooo intricate and huge!!  And they used NO PATTERNS!!  It was all free hand!

The women here cross stitch from patterns but do intricate designs on clothing and home decoration stuff without patterns. Some of it is so beautiful, yet it's just a pattern they learned from their grandmother or mother that is stored in their heads. Hundreds of beautiful designs must have been lost forever...

Hoops are unheard of here.  I asked for one at the shop that sells aida and thread but she didn't even know what I was talking about (perhaps my literal translation of hoop was wrong).

I used one of those ones where the outside is soft and the inside hard plastic. You stretched it over the fabric. Perhaps that is why it left a mark.
