My mom and I have done the great vanilla experiment for years now.  We've found that it makes no difference in the quality of vodka, in fact some of the cheaper vodkas made for a stronger vanilla extract.

I have a bulk of beautiful glass bottles with corks in my closet that have jsut found a purpose!  Maybe I should make a few extracts and bundle them.  Ope, need to go buy vanilla beans, and thanks for this wonderful post and update!

Theatre education is less about acting and more about crafting.  I design and build sets, costumes, lighting plots, theatrical cosmetics, and I LOVE dying, aging, and distressing anything!

my mom has been making her own vanilla extract for a while and she uses brandy instead of vodka. i don't know what the taste difference is, but the brandy vanilla is darker than vodka (duh).

I dont know what to say to thank you for this AWSOME post!!
I live in spain & I can only get 75ml bottles for four euros (thats more or less 4.75 USD)!!!!!!!!!!
So everytime I bake cookies or what so ever (which is VERY often) it comes out sooooo expensive!!
Im going out NOW to buy some vainilla... and I will writte back soon!!
Many thanks once again!

You can keep on adding vodka as you use the extract for a while, it doesn't water down the intensity.

Another favorite is to put the vanilla beans in sugar.  Voila!  Vanilla sugar for tons of yummy stuff.

I just wanted to second Lazurii's comment. Don't get rid of your beans/bottles when you use it up. You can either add in more vodka after you use some, or wait until the end and completely resoak and wait another month, and have a virtually never ending supply of vanilla!! My friend's mom recently told me how to make vanilla extract (she's been doing it for years) and that was what she said at least!!

She also is experimenting with a new recipe using glycerin, which would make the extract a little thicker than the vodka too. So just another option for everyone to explore too.
