My Signature Recycled Bag

View Profile
« on: March 07, 2009 03:03:21 PM »

I just wanted to share my latest recycled plastic bag project. Who says trash can't be pretty? I crocheted 6 different colors of centers for each motif and then I assembled it into a front and back panel to make the tote bag. I know how hard it is to find unique colors but this only takes one plastic bag to do the two centers. I got several of the colors from newspaper plastic sleeves and then just saved up the additional bags to make the motifs. The rest of the tote bag is made from white plastic grocery bags. I added a long strip between the panels so the bag could stand up and have some depth.

Anyway this is my first Spring theme project! Think Spring as I'm tired of winter...  Grin

This is very nice! I did a double take since it sure does not look like plastic bags at first since those centre colours are not so common in plastic bags. Great job! I am inspired to start cutting plastic bags again!

This is gorgeous & a great way to recycle plastic bags.

Was it easy to crochet with plastic bags?  It there a tip on how wide to cut your strips for ease?

Thanks for the kind comments. Crocheting with plastic bags isn't hard but you need to take it easy otherwise it can make your fingers and joints sore. Don't pull too hard on your work and take lots of breaks so you don't get sore fingers. I usually use a big aluminum N hook and cut my bags about 1 inch wide. The metal hooks seem to slide better over the plastic at least for me. I do have free patterns and lots of other information for crocheting with recycled materials if you want to visit my blog site.

Love it! I am working on my second crochet plastic bag and love how they give. Definitely are hard on the hands and wrists. Take lots of breaks! And keep crocheting!
