I just recently started crocheting myself and didn't have many problems.  Amigurumi is actually just refers to it being a knitted/crochet doll.  And they have a similar look and style.  Basically, though, the creation of the toys only involves single crocheting in the round, increasing and decreasing.

Thanks! Hopefully one day I'll get off my arse and try it!

Yay, Tanuki!!!  That's so rad!  This has definitely convinced me to teach myself to crochet.  And, just...  wow.   Shocked  Yyou even crocheted the testicles!  I think they're supposed to be bigger, though...  Tanuki (the "god," versus tanuki, the animals) was known for being... generously proportioned.   Grin  I don't know a ton about the mythology/history behind him, but he is sort of a cross between the Coyote trickster of Native American culture and Dionysus/Bacchus.  You know:  he means well, but he loves a good time, wine and women most definitely included.

EDIT: removed a small video clip (tanuki-related) because I felt it could distract too much from amy_ruth's awesome creation.  but, if anyone wants to see a clip of a tanuki and his.. *ahem* historical proportions, PM me.   Wink
