Here's another amigurumi!

Like the Daruma that I recently posted, this Tanuki is based on a traditional Japanese mythological/folkloric creature.  A tanuki is a shape-shifting raccoon-dog creature.  He's supposed to be good luck, so he is a gift for my husband who is in the middle of a job search right now.  (I'm sure there are craftsters out there who know way more about Japanese culture than I do, so if i get something wrong, please correct me!!!)

I love him because he looks so jolly and he was so much fun to make!

How adorable! You really put that together well. I'm sure your husband will find a job tomorrow! Smiley  Where did you get the pattern for these, again?

I am in love with the Amigurumi animals.. and want to make them.  I am afraid to order the books because I think I might not be able to translate them at all.  My husband knows someone who can translate them - maybe.  I am not sure.
I wish I had a sample to see if he is able to translate.
Anyone willing to trade something?  I would love to just get my eyes on a pattern to see if I can make heads or tails of it all.  I am willing to buy them off of ebay but am just scared.  The books are extremely expensive but I am just intrigued by them all.  Love the look of them..
Maybe I should start watching anime.  My husband likes it to a point but I have yet to get that interest... I would rather crochet them I suppose.

I just started to crochet. Do you think Arigurumi's too tough for a beginner?

Thanks, everyone, for the nice comments!

He's from a book.  I got it from ebay and haven't seen it again in my search for other books.  There is a website listed in the book that might help:

I just recently started crocheting myself and didn't have many problems.  Amigurumi actually just refers to it being a knitted/crochet doll.  And they have a similar look and style.  Basically, though, the creation of the toys only involves single crocheting in the round, increasing and decreasing.
